#WorldCancerDay- Recapitulating the inauguration of the White House Cervical Cancer Forum- President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative
On January 25, GIAHC had the honor of participating in the White House Cervical Cancer Forum as part of the Biden Cancer Moonshot initiative. The event welcomed distinguished figures such as Dr. Danielle Carnival, Dr. W. Kimryn Rathmell, and Dr. Emily Kainne Dokubo.
Patient and advocate voices identified critical priorities. Cervical cancer survivor Eve McDavid emphasized the need to turn the vision of elimination into actionable steps, highlighting the stagnant survival rates in contrast to other cancers. The call was clear: more investment, research, and innovation are imperative for cervical cancer.
Panel discussions featured notable figures, including Tamika Felder, Andi Lipstein Fristedt, Francisco Garcia, Kate Mevis, Debbie Saslow, Jane Segebrecht, Heather White, Vanessa Bennett, Satish Gobal, Hannah Johnson, Pavani Ram, and Kathleen Schmeler.
Key takeaways included the need for transformative change, breaking down silos, optimizing immunization registries, fostering community engagement, and anticipating self-collection tests. Dr. Debbie Saslow emphasized, "We have the technology, we have made the progress, we need to do the work."
Dr. Catharine Young issued a call to action, grounding hope in science. GIAHC actively participated in a breakout with allies in HPV and cancer prevention such as the American Medical Women’s Association with whom GIAHC co-hosts the Us vs. HPV Prevention week, federal agencies, and institutions.
The Biden Cancer Moonshot, launched in 2016 and reinvigorated in 2020, strives to "end cancer as we know it" by reducing the cancer death rate by at least 50% over the next 25 years. GIAHC remains committed to contributing to this ambitious initiative.
