Write your own growth story at Flipkart - Here’s how!

Akarsh Jain, the Senior Manager of Analytics at Flipkart, pivoted his career journey three times in seven years, painting his story in the colours of success.

Grabbing onto the possibilities and projects that sparked his interest, Akarsh learned very quickly into Flipkart that there was so much he could explore. In a company that works on its ‘Start-up’ DNA where its massive risk-taking appetite allows its employees to experiment, learn and take on the new challenges to grow, Akarsh realised that there would never be a shortage of opportunities for him. Additionally, the flat hierarchy supported him to seek guidance when required and put himself in various projects knowing that the team would have his back.

In my first month at Flipkart, I was seated with the senior leaders to discuss the plans for the upcoming year. It caught me a bit by surprise to see them all ears for ideas from everyone. The active communication helped me understand the scope of innovation and openness to risk-taking. With flexibility and knowledge about my role in the project as well as the larger framework, I began to see my career take off.”

Switch and Shift

As an analytics professional, Akarsh moved from marketing analytics to business analytics and then to product analytics, and currently manages pricing analytics.

The lack of grade barrier was a motivation and a convenience that he utilised to challenge himself into newer roles. Sharing the experience of one of his first projects in Category Analytics, he says, “When I worked under Category Analytics, we took on a project that identified individual data points and divided them into customer cohorts to customize user feeds. This was a lack that we identified and began to problem-solve proactively. The team came together, brainstormed, rolled out a plan and executed it. It was a pilot project, and the results were great! It changed how we merchandise our products. This experience taught me that if an idea is right, the leaders are all ears, and the team is ready to back it. This project strengthened our position with our stakeholders.”

When he noticed that the impact he could make with each project was exponential, he wanted to try his hand at more. He was a part of teams that revamped, radicalised, and automated processes initially manual, time-taking, and not necessarily data-driven. The team built a positioning that would positively impact the analytics at Flipkart for years to come. The team took on the audacious challenge to leave a mark, and they delivered.

We moved from being supporters to consultants. With every consumer interaction, we had data. We collate, analyse and use algorithms to problem-solve for our sellers, stakeholders, and consumers”, adds Akarsh.

Did You Know? At Flipkart, there is a designated award for taking risks and failing. The award is called Chandrayaan 2.

Rewards of Failing

The flip side to experimenting is the possibility of failure, a stepping stone that teaches more than successes do. For Akarsh, this came in the form of working in a highly challenging section of analytics. He voluntarily extended his role to take up multiple charters  and was eager to work with the teams.

It was a risk Akarsh had taken with his career. So far, he had worked on high-impact projects and learned beyond his expectations in every team he switched to. He wanted to continue challenging himself and grow, but the odds were not in his favour. He was not sure how to move ahead. He took it to his senior and had an open conversation explaining the situation.

The team and his seniors had seen him be excellent so far, so letting the team know that he wanted to shift was a difficult conversation for him to have. But when he did, his seniors were easy on him and appreciated the effort he had made so far.

There’s no downside to failure, believes Akarsh. “At Flipkart, you are rewarded for taking risks, and after the open conversation, my faith in experimenting received a boost. The team recognises your abilities, strengths and weaknesses, and promotes you to become your best self. They are extremely supportive, and it makes you want to keep at it. The exposure is unbelievable. Since the company still has a start-up culture, you can see the impact you make, the processes are quicker, and you get to take onus for the work you have done.”

As one of India’s most successful start-ups, Flipkart has an expansive room for innovation and has an ample number of challenges for people to solve, promoting experimentation, learning and growth every step of the way. The strong foundation of transparency, ownership, calculated risk-taking, continuous learning and a growth orientation puts employees and customers on the same pedestal. This way, the impact created by each Flipster is evident and continues to motivate them to take on bigger challenges and witness the miracles made.

Hi, I purchased a mobile phone Redmi 9 Prime ( Mint Green, 64GB ) from Flipkart on 04/07/2022. It was of cost 11999. After a few months of usage, It has some charging issues. Battery charge is shown as 1% at all and will switch off when the power gets off. When approached to MI Service center. They found out that it is a used phone (Second-hand phone) and refused warranty. They claimed that the IMEI number is also a used one. As it is an old IMEI number, they cannot register Job-sheet and service note through online. So I was forced to pay Rs. 118/- as service charge. This is a cheating I myself experienced from Flipkart. If I need to purchase a used phone, I will get it from nearby shops with a least price than this. So I request and expect a justful solution for my grievance from Flipkart. I am attaching Invoice and Service records for your reference IMEI.jpg Service record.jpg With regards Ajeshkumar P N 9497454813
