Are Your Remote Employees Engaged And Productive?

Remote work is quickly becoming the norm in a post-Covid-19 world. More people than ever are not only willing to work remotely, but expect it to be an option. Statista reports an impressive 35.4% of the United States was working remotely during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. That number has come back down to just 5.2% as of September 2022.

A large percentage of the population had to learn to work from home when the pandemic enforced stay-at-home orders. Many companies also learned the importance of remote work and how to make it plausible for their employees. With all of the benefits of remote work, it does come with one major drawback.

Employers struggle with keeping their remote workers both engaged and productive. It’s obviously much easier to keep employees motivated when you’re in person, so remote work does come with its own issues for employers.

It can be difficult if not impossible for management to know whether or not a remote employee is engaged and doing the best job they can, or if that employee is having difficulty finding motivation. Video calls, emails, time trackers, and other means of attempting to keep tabs on a remote employee can be useful but are unable to paint the whole picture of how an employee is doing.

Some of the more common signs of an unmotivated remote employee to look out for are a lack of useful communication or communications that are confusing and defeatist. For example, seeing or hearing a remote worker say something akin to “That won’t work” without trying to find a solution, is a pretty good sign that an employee might need some help getting their motivation for work back.

Communication that is both regular and effective is key for keeping yourself and remote employees on the same page. Try to find the perfect balance between too much communication and too little, and stick to it.

Employees that are overwhelmed with messages will just get stressed out, and likely miss anything important you tried to send to them. It’s also important to relay only the essential information to your remote workers, so they can stay focused on what is actually crucial to their jobs.
