This photo from Dr Amer Al Nimr is a winner in the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Global Health photo contest for #AAP2024! Dr Al Nimr captured the impact of medical outreach in his photo from Jordan. Dr Al Nimr is the section chief of pediatric gastroenterology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics. In his words, his winning photo shows a "physician partnering with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) to provide pediatric endoscopies for free for Syrian refugees during the October 2023 medical trip. SAMS & our pediatric gastroenterology team from Dartmouth screened 300 patients with gastrointestinal issues and ended up performing endoscopies on 30 patients who really needed them for free in a private hospital in Amman." Pediatricians like Dr Al Nimr exemplify our dedication to a healthy future for all children. Their unwavering efforts remind us of the impact that skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals can make in the world. Thank you Dr Al-Nimr for giving us permission to share this photo, and congratulations on your photo contest win! #globalhealth

In this year's American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Global Health photo competition, Dr Sapna Khemka, DO was a winner in the category of "Compelling Images of Global Health Clinical Spaces". This photo was taken in Nicaragua and showcases the home as a family-oriented clinical space. Dr Khemka is a pediatrician at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. In her own words: "Patient homes may not be thought of as traditional clinical spaces, but for this young boy with Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, his Nicaraguan home is a crucial location for care delivery. Meeting patients where they are allows clinicians to assess and improve quality of life in a meaningful and personal way. The simplicity of the two bars on the porch of his home allows this child to prolong independence through improved mobility. Watching his smile as he showed us how he moves drives home the importance of creating clinical spaces patients find familiar and comfortable." We are inspired by pediatricians like Dr Khemka who go beyond traditional clinical settings to provide compassionate care. This photo captures the dedication and innovation of pediatricians who support children’s health and independence. Congratulation to our winner Dr Khemka, and thank you for letting us share this photo! #globalhealth #Nicaragua
