🇪🇺 Last week, the European Commission delayed the compliance deadline of the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) by 12 months, citing the need for proper time for implementation. Originally scheduled for the end of 2024, the law will now become applicable on 30 December 2025 for large companies and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises. In addition, the Commission also published some long-awaited guidance and a framework for international cooperation. Find out more on the EC website below 👇 https://lnkd.in/dywTvCTx

Together, making ethical supply chains the new normal
About us
The Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) is a collaborative effort between 25 leading NGOs to build and scale up ethical supply chains for agricultural and forestry products. Our core offering is the Accountability Framework, a consensus-based guide for companies and others on setting, implementing and monitoring effective commitments on deforestation, ecosystem conversion, and human rights in ethical supply chains.

Later this month the Convention on Biological Diversity will be hosting it's 16th summit (#COP16). Ahead of the event, AFi Coalition member WWF has released new analysis (and a handy complementary tracker tool) on countries’ National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). Unfortunately, it looks like many countries are falling behind on their pledges to halt and reverse the loss of nature by 2030. Only 20 fully revised NBSAPs and 60 national targets have been published, out of a total of the 196 countries that adopted the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in 2022. AFi Coalition member CDP has recently released a report entitled: Commitments and Actions of Prominent Cattle and Soy Producers. 🚜🐄 The report offers a snapshot of the current performance and progress of eight prominent cattle and soy producers, including Amaggi and Minerva. The analysis is based on 2023 disclosures made to CDP across a range of key performance indicators (KPIs). The report also includes recommendations for stakeholders on how to meet KPIs if they have not already done so. See the full report at the link below 👇 🔗https://lnkd.in/eQAgwQqA #CorporateDis

It’s #InternationalCoffeeDay! ☕ This year, we’re highlighting the value of collaboration to achieve a more sustainable coffee sector. Around half a trillion cups of coffee are consumed each year, with over 100 million people depending on coffee for their livelihoods. The sector is vast, spanning over 70 countries, although only five represent 70% of total coffee supply: Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Environmental issues within coffee supply chains, like deforestation, won’t be solved by individual companies working on their own. Instead, companies should work together with their peers, governments, and local communities to find effective, and long-lasting solutions at a sectoral, landscape, or jurisdictional level. At the AFi, we aim to empower companies with agricultural and forestry commodity supply chains, including coffee, to make their business operations more responsible with the guidance of the Accountability Framework. By setting goals, taking action, and reporting on their progress, companies can make their coffee supply chains more sustainable – one cup at a time! #ICD2024 #Coffee #SustainableCoffee #Commodities

Over the last few months, the AFi and World Resources Institute (WRI) have been working together to contextualise and operationalise definitions of non-forest ecosystem conversion. The team has organised two workshop sessions with a diverse array of stakeholders, focused on non-forest ecosystem conversion in both North and South America. Some of the key takeaways include: 📑 Companies and other stakeholders need clearer guidance on how to define, identify, and map non-forest ecosystem conversion in their supply chains. 🌎 Regional engagement is crucial to understand the nuances in how these definitions can be applied across different geographies and ecosystem types (ie, wetlands vs. grasslands). 🌧️ Varying environmental conditions (eg, differing levels of rainfall) play a part our understanding of how non-forest land is used. 📊 More accessible, consistent, and reliable data is a must. See the full summary of the project and insights from the workshop sessions, penned by Sam Levy, Science & Policy Fellow, The AFi/Rainforest Alliance and Ana Reboredo Segovia, Research Associate, WRI, on the AFi blog. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ggCb7q3g

🗣 "Rather than focusing on shiny new opportunities while other parts of the business continue to fund colossal impacts, it's vital to do the work of understanding existing impacts and dependencies and bring them into alignment" - Niki Mardas, our Executive Director, spoke at the World Biodiversity Summit at #ClimateWeekNYC. 🤝 #Climate transition pathways and nature transition pathways are essential steps to tackle both crises. We need US financial institutions to be at the centre of efforts to drive real change for #nature and forests. #WorldBiodiversitySummit World Climate Foundation Climate Group

WWF's Sarah Wilson and Hayley Lawton chatted with WWF's Pete Pearson about food at #ClimateWeekNYC. How do we solve the great food puzzle of producing food to nourish everyone in the world, without harming the planet? It will take multi-layered action, at the global, national and local level in food production, consumption and loss and waste. We are all part of the solution. Learn more: https://wwf.to/4eibnNP.

AFi Coalition member WWF recently released the Great Food Puzzle, a tool designed to help identify high-impact and place-based solutions to make complex regional food systems more sustainable Find out more here ➡ https://lnkd.in/e4dHND49
Agriculture production and food systems consume 70% of our freshwater, generate one third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and are the main drivers of biodiversity loss. Reimagining these systems represents outsized potential to address both the climate crisis and nature loss. But to get this right, we need region-specific approaches that work for local ecosystems, local economies and communities. This variation renders the solution nearly as complex as the problem itself. Having worked in over 50 countries on conservation and sustainable development, I’ve seen how important local decision-making is to long-term success. I’m really proud of all the work that’s gone into creating WWF’s Great Food Puzzle—which breaks down food systems into 6 distinct types, making it easier for countries to learn from one another’s successes. By focusing on natural resource management, sustainable consumption, and finance reform, we can scale these solutions globally. https://lnkd.in/eBAWZGzz Cheers to World Wildlife Fund, WWF, Brent Loken, Joao Campari and Rebecca Shaw.
