Americans seeking homegrown proof of the civic return on investment in public transportation and transformative potential of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) uphold the redevelopment of #Denver Union Station (DUS) as the gold standard. Since the pioneering transit hub opened in 2014, DUS has become one of the nation’s best examples of a modern multimodal station embedded in a meticulously crafted, walkable urban neighborhood. What was once a dilapidated train station with poor transit service in a largely abandoned neighborhood is now the thriving focal point of Lower Downtown (LoDo) and one of Denver's most sought-after living locations. DUS is a must-see destination for visitors and one of the coolest places in the city thanks to its breathtaking architecture, comfortable open spaces, and mix of innovative restaurants, shops, hotels, and amenities. Working for both the P3 master developer Union Station Neighborhood Company (USNC) and the RTD, AECOM led a world-class #Design/Build team for Kiewit including partners Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Hargreaves and many talented local firms. As the lead designer of the $489 million #transit system, which includes state-of-the-art light #rail, Amtrak/commuter rail, regional #bus, and downtown #shuttle #terminals, we delivered an unprecedented transit hub and transit-oriented neighborhood at the same time by blurring the traditional lines between public realm and transportation facility and seamlessly integrating transit, streets, passenger stations, new mixed-use buildings, sidewalks, open spaces, and amenities into a larger station environment. Find out more about our work here. As planning gets underway for remaking other significant transportation hubs as catalysts for 21st century urban revitalization—New York Penn Station, Washington Union Station, Charlotte Gateway, San Jose Diridon Station, to name a few—Denver offers us both best practices and inspiration for the kind of city-building excellence and progressive collaboration we can achieve together. Be part of us and make a positive impact on the communities we serve. We’re currently recruiting Transit Station and TOD principals across the county. The Madison Metro East-West Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Wisconsin, USA has officially opened! The cutting-edge new #transit system includes 31 passenger stations, dedicated bus lanes, electric buses, and charging stations. The City of Madison, WI engaged members of the local community in a public design competition to help shape the shelter design. The winning entry offered a vision inspired by Madison values including environmental conservation, a nod to Arts and Crafts architecture, and celebration of the distinctive neighborhoods served by the transit corridor. The result is a fantastic contribution to the urban streetscapes of the cool capital city known for its culture, outdoor life, and vibrant downtown. “Throughout the design and construction process our #architects brought a controlled approach to realize the shelter’s simple forms and timeless geometry through careful material selection and meticulous detailing.” The stations feature minimal vertical structure, transparent screen walls, and a floating ceiling with skylights to protect waiting passengers from the elements while offering views of the city and oncoming buses. Black painted steel and wood-look soffit add warmth and contemporary aesthetic not typically associated with public transit facilities. Integrated digital technology, lighting, and signage elevate the passenger experience. “Our mission was to leverage the power of great architecture for a BRT system that moves and inspires us.” Jamie Rudnycky, AIA, NCARB, ENV SP To learn more: https://lnkd.in/gQdehXQc Katie Johnson, AIA, MBA, ENV SP Michael Schneider Bill Crowley Gavin Poindexter Lauren Lynch, AICP Andrew Timco Tyler Tkachuk, P.E., PTOE Tyler Besch Kristopher Takacs Charlie Andrews
