🎉🏙️ Celebrating 150 Volumes of ASCE Journals! 🏙️🎉 📚 Why It Matters: This study laid the groundwork for modern structural engineering practices, promoting safer and more reliable building designs. Today, we are spotlighting the 1982 paper titled “Probability Based Load Criteria: Assessment of Current Design Practice” by Theodore V. Galambos, F.ASCE, Bruce Ellingwood, M.ASCE, James G. MacGregor, F.ASCE, and C. Allin Cornell, M.ASCE in the Journal of the Structural Division, now the ASCE’s Journal of Structural Engineering. 🔍 Key Insights: ➡️ Developed uniform load factors and load-combination rules. ➡️ Analyzed structural reliability using classical reliability theory. ➡️ Highlighted variability in reliability levels across current design standards. 🔓 Access is free for registered ASCE Library users until December 31, 2024. 📝 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gF5Ayejb 🎉 Explore the entire Celebrating 150 Volumes collection: https://lnkd.in/eDA5DHhP SEI - Structural Engineering Institute | John van de Lindt #ASCE150 #StructuralEngineering #CivilEngineering #EngineeringHistory #ReliabilityAnalysis #EngineeringSafety #ProbabilisticDesign #LoadFactors #BuildingSafety #EngineeringInnovation

🌟📘 Join the ASCE/EWRI 69 Standards Committee! 📘🌟 The Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of ASCE is seeking new committee members to help shape the future of managed aquifer recharge. We’re looking for dedicated professionals to join the ASCE/EWRI 69 Standards Committee, chaired by Gordon McCurry, Ph.D., McCurry Hydrology, LLC, Boulder, CO. Committee members will be instrumental in revising the next edition of ASCE/EWRI 69: Standard Guidelines for Managed Aquifer Recharge. This standard provides a thorough and up-to-date description of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) projects. Ongoing demand for water supplies and the need for water storage have led MAR to becoming an increasingly important component for both storage and supply in regional water planning and management. Over the past several decades, much has been learned regarding how to design and implement a successful, cost-efficient MAR project and what pitfalls exist that prevent MAR success. With this standard, many water resources professionals can become aware of the benefits, techniques, standard practices, and applications of MAR. 🗓️ Deadline: November 15, 2024 We welcome: 💧 Practicing engineers 💧 Researchers 💧 Building officials 💧 Contractors 💧 Construction product representatives 💧 Younger professionals 💧 Historically underrepresented professionals ASCE is committed to fostering an inclusive environment. We encourage all eligible candidates to apply, especially those from historically marginalized groups, protected veterans, women, and individuals with disabilities. 🔗 Apply Now: https://lnkd.in/gUxzWMpK When applying, select “EWRI” from the Institute drop-down and choose “Managed Aquifer Recharge (ASCE/EWRI 69)”. Please indicate the Membership Category for which you are applying. Join us in contributing to this vital work and network with experienced professionals. Your expertise can have a significant impact! Happy to share our recently published research paper (co-authored by Dr. Muaz O. Ahmed, PhD, PE and Dr. Islam H. El-adaway) titled “Assessing the Critical Factors Influencing Worker Safety in Roadway Work Zones”. Roadway construction and maintenance are essential for sustaining and improving infrastructure. However, interactions between workers, moving construction equipment, and passing motorists create hazardous conditions, leading to hundreds of annual fatalities in the US. This study addresses this issue by surveying 298 work zone professionals to assess the criticality of various safety factors in work zone environments. The results indicate that driver-related factors, such as driver attention and unsafe driving, are considered the most critical, while technological sophistication and the condition of vehicles and construction equipment are viewed as least critical. Clustering analysis further revealed that driver, work, and design-related factors exhibited the highest levels of criticality. The findings of this study provide guidance for state DOTs and safety practitioners to enhance their practices based on worker-centered perceptions. Additionally, the results highlight key areas for future research to explore underexamined, yet highly critical, safety factors. The paper is published in ASCE’s Journal of Construction Engineering and Management and can be accessed at: https://lnkd.in/gCReidCc This research was supported by the funding provided by Missouri Department of Transportation at Missouri University of Science and Technology - Missouri S&T Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. Special thanks to the Reviewers, Associate Editor, and Editor for the insightful recommendations and suggestions that helped improve the quality of this paper.
