Vimenti is an integrated service center and school in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 that provides a variety of family services using a two-generation #2Gen approach. A new research study with Urban Institute shows that Vimenti families performed better than comparison families across education 📚 , economic 💸 , and social outcomes 💟. Vimenti families were also more satisfied with their school and community services than those in a comparison group. We're reimagining leadership to create a future where all children and families flourish.
About us
Ascend at the Aspen Institute Founder Anne Mosle set out with a mission to spark and spread breakthroughs in how we achieve intergenerational family prosperity and well-being. For a decade, Ascend has catalyzed a modern two-generation (2Gen) approach. One that intentionally focuses on children and the adults in their lives together, honors lived experience, and encompasses racial, gender, and economic equity through an intersectional lens. We are a community of leaders — well-connected, well-prepared and well-positioned — building political will that transforms hearts, minds, policies, and practices. We believe in the power of co-creation. Through the Ascend Fellowship, we identify and invest in bold leaders bridging divides and reimagining the levers of power to ensure all children and families thrive. Today, 120 Ascend Fellows are transforming the leadership landscape, from winning historic local, state and federal elections to reinventing systems of care and unlocking capital that opens new doors to economic mobility to revolutionizing our understanding of brain development for parents and caregivers. Through the Ascend Network, more than 500 organizations work directly with families to operationalize 2Gen approaches and design new tools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico as well as across the globe in Ireland, Rwanda, and Guatemala. Together, we have ignited a movement reaching 12 million families.

Last week, I had the honor of leading a two-generation (2Gen) workshop at ChildCareGroup’s Staff Development Day in Dallas, TX as a part of #Mission2Gen ChildCareGroup is Network Partner with Ascend at the Aspen Institute and champions a 2Gen approach through their early childhood development programs with children and their caregivers, and through their training of early childhood professionals. With a staff of over 400 present on this day, the commitment and passion is palpable! To Tori Mannes and her leadership team, what a fantastic day of learning and fun. You set the bar high with your thoughtful agenda and commitment to the theme. It was also a personal honor to share the stage with former NASA astronaut, Bernard Harris, who kicked off the day with an inspirational keynote address. The future is bright! Nationally, Black undergraduate students are the most likely to be parents across racial and ethnic backgrounds. By supporting student parents, HBCUs make an impact for generations. This week, I attended the 2024 UNITE Summit for #BlackHigherEducation where I co-presented “Student Parent Success: Promising Practices for Black Family Futures" with Toya Teamer from Teamer Strategy Group, Breona M. Hayes, Ph.D. from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Micheline Lambert from Jarvis Christian University, and Carol Alexander-Lewis from Grambling State University. The session highlighted Ascend at the Aspen Institute’s Black and Native Family Futures Fund (BNFFF), supported by Lumina Foundation and Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies (MACP). Learn more about the Fund here: https://lnkd.in/giJ54x8h Thank you to Jasmine Haywood, Ph.D. and Rob Shorette, Ph.D. at Lumina and Naomi Farabee at MACP for your thought partnership on the BNFFF, and our HBCU partners, Stillman College and Bowie State University, who presented with us last year at UNITE. Also, a special thanks to the Imaginable Futures team, Vinice Davis, Enyi Okebugwu, and Alex Huang, who support Ascend's Postsecondary Success for Parents Initiative in all our endeavors.

"I think younger people feel a sense of urgency to solve big problems. They’re not ossified in status quo thinking, and they’re willing to work with whoever to get the thing they want to do done." Civil Society Fellow and former Ascend at the Aspen Institute Fellow Layla Zaidane is building the future of bipartisanship as the President & CEO of Future Caucus (formerly Millennial Action Project). Tribal Colleges and Universities must often strive to develop solutions to support student parents with limited resources. Today, I presented during the 33rd Annual TCU Conference with Cheyenne Brady of the Center for Native American Youth, Marquieta Jilot of Stone Child College, Ashley John of Dine' College (formerly Navajo Community College) and Rachel Wippert of Blackfeet Community College to share learnings from Ascend at the Aspen Institute’s Black and Native Family Futures Fund. After working with the Fund since 2022, I was excited to impart promising practices that eight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) are leveraging to help student parents achieve academic success. Twenty-nine percent of all American Indian/Alaska Native undergraduates are parenting. As champions of holistic family supports, Tribal Colleges and Universities are positioned to help student parents thrive. In support of building campus cultures that bolster student parent success, I will join Cheyenne Brady of the Center for Native American Youth, Marquieta Jilot of Stone Child College, Ashley John of Dine' College (formerly Navajo Community College) and Rachel Wippert of Blackfeet Community College to present at the 33rd Annual TCU Conference tomorrow. “Student Parent Success: Promising Practices for Native Family Futures” will include an overview of Ascend at the Aspen Institute's Black and Native Family Futures Fund. I’m excited to share our learnings from the Fund, which align with the promising practices outlined in Ascend’s “Tapping the Talent of Student Parents: A Playbook for Postsecondary Leaders.” Learn more about those promising practices here: https://lnkd.in/evzqpat5
