The recording of last month's Diverse Dozen event at the ASCEND conference is now available for viewing! The Office of Space Commerce was pleased to co-sponsor this year's programming, which gave voice and the mainstage spotlight to 12 talented individuals offering fresh perspectives on the topic of space sustainability. OSC Chief of Staff Jason Kim joined D12 co-founder Moriba Jah in introducing the 2024 inductees, who represent a wide swath of humanity. All of them are models for inspiring a more inclusive space community and workforce for the future. Check out the video at https://lnkd.in/e34q_jyb #ascendspace #DiverseDozen

ICYMI: The 2024 ASCEND Diverse Dozen gave us a lot to think about. Here are 🖐️ five key takeaways:    1️⃣ Individual stories from across the globe enhance the discussion on space and sustainability, showcasing diverse paths to advocating for environmental stewardship.  2️⃣ Innovative technologies are essential to minimize waste and promote responsible space use, paralleling Earth’s environmental challenges.  3️⃣ Including underrepresented voices in the space workforce is vital for addressing global challenges, fostering creativity, and enhancing collaboration.  4️⃣ Updated policies and international agreements are urgently needed to tackle space debris and militarization, ensuring space remains peaceful and sustainable.  5️⃣ Emphasizing empathy is key to fostering global collaboration, ensuring all nations benefit from space exploration and environmental protection.    Watch their lightning fast talks on the AIAA YouTube Channel: 2024 ASCEND Day 1: https://bit.ly/4dMaxZa D12 is presented by ASCEND in partnership with Moriba Jah and the Office of Space Commerce. #ascendspace #aiaa #spacesustainability

At 2024 ASCEND, I had the pleasure of speaking with Juan Alonso. Juan is the Chair of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University as well as the CTO and Co-Founder of Luminary Cloud, a company which launched out of stealth in March 2024. Luminary Cloud is "the world’s first modern computer-aided engineering SaaS platform that provides engineers insights in minutes, allowing for quick simulation, analysis, and iterations that were once impossible." Juan also provided valuable advice for any engineering students wishing to start their own companies. AIAA Luminary Cloud #AIAA #2024ASCEND #AIAAascend #engineering

Congratulations to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Johnson Orbital Debris Engineering Model (ORDEM) team for being named the co-winner of NASA’s Software of the Year award presented at the 2024 AIAA ASCEND conference! ORDEM is NASA’s primary tool for computing and mitigating risks of orbital debris. Modeling orbital debris is critical to planning, designing, and executing NASA missions to ensure safety and success. More than 600 entities around the world also use ORDEM to evaluate collision and mission-ending risks. As more governments and private companies continue to explore space, it is crucial that we track the debris risks in increasingly crowded orbits. Congratulations to both the ORDEM and the co-winning NASA Ames Research Center Prognostics Python Packages Team! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gWKvGxQw #GiantLeapsStartHere

ICYMI: Astrodebates returned for a second year at 2024 ASCEND. With less than 24 hours to prepare and sides chosen by a live coin flip, four teams took the #ascendspace stage for Astrodebates I & II. Each team expressed their perspectives and arguments on topics voted on by ASCEND attendees. If you didn’t witness these lively exchanges in person, watch the videos to see how the teams performed under pressure. Last week was truly an unforgettable experience. Selected as one of 24 Diversity Scholars from a pool of over 200 applicants, I joined the pioneering group of women at the inaugural AIAA Aviation Forum + Ascend in Las Vegas. The event was beyond my wildest expectations. Surrounded by incredibly passionate women, I discovered a shared purpose and determination unlike anything I've encountered. Together, we are a force to be reckoned with in aerospace, poised to revolutionize the industry. I can't wait to witness the incredible impact we will make. The unwavering support from Michael Lagana, Jimmy Nguyen, and the entire AIAA team turned this conference into a life-changing event and for that words can't describe how thankful I am for you guys. I've gained a profound understanding of the future of sustainability in aerospace, a future I'm determined to shape. This conference was a turning point, introducing me to industry leaders and inspiring young professionals. I'm eager to delve deeper into the world of sustainable aerospace and contribute to its advancement. An amazing week at AIAA ASCEND at Caesar's Forum in Las Vegas. The technology microtrends panel covered a wide range of aerospace innovation – future science impacts of high performance space computing, spacecraft onboard AI, autonomy, space system design, microelectronics, talent development, and many more. Technology microtrends are niche, small and localized developments that may not be as widely adopted or recognized as major technological advancements, but have a near-certain significant impact on the future of space exploration. Thank you to those who connected with new ideas and diverse voices, I truly enjoyed the interactions and invigorating conversations. A.C. Keeping busy at ASCEND! OSC's Sandra Magnus spoke about our collaboration with DoD on the Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS), and Jason Kim spoke about regulations and incentives for debris remediation. The team also held a public forum with the SSA industry on conjunction assessment metrics and participated in AIAA's speed mentoring session for students and young professionals.
