Up next on Buoyant’s Service Mesh Academy: Building a Secure, Reliable, Observable IDP with Backstage from Spotify and Linkerd, co-taught with Backstage maintainer Ben Lambert! Save your spot and register today. Microservices applications are at the heart of cloud native, but they can be hard to work with. You need the security, reliability, and observability offered by a service mesh — and as your application grows and becomes more complex — you also need the kind of information and visibility offered by an internal developer platform (IDP). Historically, we've tended to approach these as completely different tools...but what if they can work together? It turns out that giving the IDP direct access to all the critical information that the mesh already knows is a game-changer. Join us to see how Backstage and Linkerd can join forces to bring the depth of Linkerd's dynamic metrics to Backstage's single-pane-of-glass visibility into the application! We'll be demoing the newly available Linkerd plugin for Backstage, showing off how to get the most from both tools and discussing plans for the future. #linkerd #servicemesh #opensource #cloudnative

“If you haven't heard of Backstage, firstly where have you been😁”. Every company is a tech company now, and so it’s no wonder that the need to improve developer experience has become so important and valued, whether you’re in streaming or manufacturing, a startup or a Fortune 500. Thanks to Gartner for helping more companies understand the options they have for adopting Backstage. And we’re here to help! Whether you end up building an internal developer portal from scratch or adopt a turnkey SaaS solution, like Spotify Portal, the best time to adopt a Backstage IDP was yesterday. The second best time is today. https://lnkd.in/dii3NEui
#Backstage has become one of the most mentioned technologies in my client calls with platform teams over the last 18 months and I decided we needed some dedicated advice for Gartner clients evaluating, using and (in some cases) abusing the technology. "Assessing Backstage for Your Internal Developer Portal" (https://lnkd.in/dBwHftcw) is now available to Gartner for Tech Pro's subscribers. If you haven't heard of Backstage, firstly where have you been😁, but more importantly, Backstage is an open-source framework developed by Spotify (Backstage from Spotify) for building internal developer portals (IDP) with one of the healthiest contributor communities of all Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) projects. Platform teams implementing developer portals and software catalogs have found it a source of inspiration, innovation, and frustration—the reasons for which are covered in the research. The super-short summary is "do your homework"... evaluate the upfront and ongoing development effort to use the OSS framework, do a detailed analysis of the status and capability of the plug-ins you care most about for _your_ portal, and know the alternatives, whether commercially supported products based on Backstage or other IDP products. Lots more details and guidance in the published research. And, if you're looking for more general advice for implementing internal developer portals look no further than "How to Implement Internal Developer Portals" (https://lnkd.in/dnjR25Gg) or come along to #GartnerApps (https://lnkd.in/dHk_H93x) Summit in London on September 9-10 where I'll be presenting on the topic. #platformengineering #developerexperience, #dx #internaldeveloperportals #internaldeveloperplatforms

☀️ Join us for Portal Office Hours this summer! The next one is tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 15! Meet Joe and Bernie. One of them is a Spotify engineer who’s been helping onboard Backstage adopters all over the world, at companies of all shapes and sizes. The other one is an expert doggy paddler. This summer, when they are not hiking together, the one who is an engineer is doing live demos of Spotify Portal for Backstage for anyone who drops by during our open Portal Office Hours. If you want to see Spotify Portal in action — and pick a Spotify engineer’s brains about our new, easy-to-set-up-and-maintain IDP — register for one of our biweekly office hours on Zoom. 🧑💻 Register for Portal Office Hours + live demo: https://hubs.ly/Q02LllN60 🐕 Apply for the Portal beta: https://hubs.ly/Q02LkRdf0

Now with support for multiple PagerDuty accounts in a single Backstage instance, you can send all the right alerts to all the right people, no matter where they sit in your org. It’s just the latest way that a centralized Backstage IDP (internal developer portal) can help tame the chaos of software engineering and simplify infrastructure complexity for your teams.
