Medical robots have come a long way since the '80s. What started as simple surgical assistance has grown into a game-changing force in patient recovery and occupational therapy. Here’s some of the key milestones, and some of the places that Barrett has been involved. ⭐ 1985: PUMA 560 - was one of the first robots to assist in surgery, performing a precise brain biopsy. This early success showed how robotics could boost precision in medicine, setting the stage for safer, less invasive procedures. ⭐ 1999: MAKO Surgical - licensed Barrett’s flagship WAM® robot arm for its RIO® surgical robot, a major step in developing precision tools for orthopedic surgery. MAKO's work with the WAM-enabled RIO eventually led to the company being purchased by Stryker for $1.6B. ⭐ 2015: ROSA - developed by Zimmer Biomet, ROSA advanced surgical robotics by offering detailed 3D modeling, real-time feedback, and precise component placement for knee, hip, and brain surgeries. Building on earlier tools like the PUMA 560 and da Vinci systems, ROSA enabled minimally invasive approaches and improved surgical precision across complex procedures ⭐ 2024: Burt in Occupational Therapy Burt is shaking up stroke recovery and occupational therapy by offering personalized, adaptive exercises to help patients regain strength and mobility. Burt's capabilities include activities like adaptive resistance training, which adjusts difficulty based on patient progress, and precise motion tracking, which provides real-time feedback to both therapists and patients. Unlike traditional therapy, Burt provides consistent, targeted support, giving patients a better shot at recovery and a higher quality of life.
