As the full moon approaches, we had the privilege of celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with our elderly neighbors in Dongshan subdistrict and Tiaoshan Village last Friday. This special occasion, known for family reunions, allowed us to extend our warmest wishes to over 100 seniors. It was a joyous event, made even more memorable with the presence of Marko Murtonen, who joined us and strengthened our commitment to building strong community connections. Children are the world’s hope for a better tomorrow. Today, we are excited to bring the renowned BASF Kids’ Lab to Zhanjiang again, witnessed by Haryono Lim, President of Mega Projects Asia, and Marko Murtonen, GM of BASF Integrated Site (Guangdong) Co. Ltd., along with dedicated BASF colleagues, community representatives, volunteers, and of course, the many wonderful children and their families. During the five-day program, around 1000 children aged 6 to 12 from across the city will delve into the fascinating world of chemistry through interactive and safe hands-on experiments. This year’s program introduces two new scientific experiments, "Fantasy Foam" and "Water Absorbent Magic", which will enable children to explore the wonderland of polymers and how material innovation and its tailored solutions improve our daily lives. Through these engaging activities, we not only impart valuable scientific methods and skills, but also foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of science. With these efforts, we aim to ignite curiosity in children, planting seeds of innovation and sustainability at their early age. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event possible! Yesterday marked an important gathering at the BASF Zhanjiang Verbund site with our 9th Community Advisory Panel (CAP) meeting, a significant event that strengthens our ties with the local community. Joined by Haryono Lim, President of Mega Projects Asia, and Marko Murtonen, GM of BASF Integrated Site (Guangdong) Co. Ltd., along with other BASF Zhanjiang colleagues, we welcomed around 30 representatives from the local community. During the meeting, we engaged in meaningful discussions on a range of topics that are important to both BASF and the local community, such as the latest developments at our site, our ongoing commitment to safety, health, and environmental protection, and exchanges with the local community to hear their voices. Established in August 2020, our CAP in Zhanjiang has diverse community members. Through regular CAP meetings, we conduct open and in-depth communication with the local community, allowing us to align our site’s growth with the needs and aspirations of the local community and ensuring a collaborative approach to sustainable development. At BASF, we aspire to grow our business in ways that are sustainable from economic, environmental, and social perspectives. As a responsible member of the community, we are committed to growing together with the communities where we operate, creating more value for Zhanjiang local communities, and collectively striving for a joint sustainable future in and with Zhanjiang. Meet Luo Wei, a Rubik's cube genius and proud native of Zhanjiang. After his graduation, Luo Wei has chosen to start a new chapter of his life right back in his hometown at the BASF Zhanjiang Verbund site. As BASF's largest investment to date, this site not only attracts many of the sharpest minds in the industry worldwide but also provides local talents like Luo Wei with opportunities to flourish in their hometown. "I returned to my hometown Zhanjiang because BASF gave me a vision for my career," Luo Wei shares. This greenfield mega project offers a unique chance for youth to learn, develop, and grow to their full potential! Safety is always our first priority! This week at our Zhanjiang Verbund site, we celebrated the Global Safety Days 2024 (GSD) - a long-standing tradition at BASF dedicated to reinforcing our commitment to fostering a robust safety culture and enabling the optimal well-being of our people. Under the theme "Together, we build safety," this year’s GSD at BASF Zhanjiang Verbund site highlights the collective efforts across our site to build a safe working environment, as safety is a joint responsibility! During the week-long event, we further elevate our people’s safety awareness and competence through about 150 session activities, engaging nearly all our employees and contractors at the site. Activities include experiential safety programs on the scene, safety training, seminars, safety dialogues, and online interactive programs. We have maintained a strong safety record since the commencement of the project, but we believe there is always more to be done in this respect. Talents are the cornerstones of our long-term success. This week, Haryono Lim, President of Mega Projects Asia, and Marko Murtonen, GM of BASF Integrated Site (Guangdong) Co. Ltd., along with colleagues from BASF Zhanjiang Verbund site, visited our trainees in Nanjing. They are from our partner vocational schools and our new joiners, who are currently undergoing technical training, getting themselves ready for operations. They engaged in a constructive and enthusiastic dialogue, where they listened to the trainees' learning experiences, and provided in-depth responses to their career and project-related inquiries. A big “Thank You” to BASF-YPC Company Limited and BASF Specialty Chemicals (Nanjing) Co. Ltd. and also to our peer sites in China and overseas for their support in training our BASF Zhanjiang talents. We passionately believe in the importance of investing in our people and empowering them through various training opportunities to thrive.
