About us
On July 1, 2022 started the Project “Biointelligent Production Sensor to Measure Viral Activity (BioProS)”. The project duration will be 48 months and seven partners from five countries are represented in the BioProS consortium: Fraunhofer IPA and Fraunhofer IGB (Germany), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany), NecstGen (Netherlands), Elvesys (France), EurA AG (Germany) and Cellink - a BICO Company (Sweden). The aim of the project partners is to transform virus biomanufacturing processes and enable new quality control strategies by a continuous, real-time monitoring using biohybrid sensor technology to detect cell-based virus infection cycles. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (HORIZON-CL4-2021-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-27: Development of technologies/devices for bio-intelligent manufacturing (RIA)) under grant agreement No 101070120.

Egon Prioglio from Dipartimento di Meccanica - Politecnico di Milano presented at the 18th CIRP Conference on Intelligent Computation in Manufacturing Engineering, held from July 10-12. The presentation, authored by him, Giovanni Zanderigo, and Bianca Maria Colosimo, detailed advancements in computer vision techniques for monitoring the extrusion-based bioprinting process using in-situ thermal imaging with a transparent biomaterial. The team 🔬🖨️👨🔬👩🔬 demonstrated how image analysis can reconstruct printed geometry in real-time and evaluate filament width errors along the printing path. Additionally, they introduced a deep learning architecture for next-frame prediction, which uses thermal image sequences to detect printing anomalies through prediction errors. This research contributes to developing solutions that enhance replicability and reproducibility in bioprinting in a non-destructive and cost-effective manner, facilitating industry adoption. #Bioprinting #ComputerVision #DeepLearning #ManufacturingEngineering #ThermalImaging #EUHorizon #BioProS

🔬 Presenting a significant advancement in bioprinting: "Novel solutions for in-situ monitoring in extrusion-based bioprinting." 🚀 This work, authored by Bianca Maria Colosimo, Simone Giovanni G., and Davide Moscatelli from Politecnico di Milano, introduces a unique approach for real-time monitoring of extrusion-based bioprinting, combining visible, thermal, and fluorescence imaging techniques. 🔍 Key features include: ▪ Accurate reconstruction of the last printed layer's geometry ▪ Detailed assessment of thermal cooling history across the bioprinted construct ▪ Initial exploration of in-situ fluorescent microscopy for local cell density evaluation 🔬 Methodology: Utilizing a commercial pneumatic extrusion-based bioprinter, they employed square lattice patterns with sodium alginate-based material and Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC). The monitoring platform integrated an HD camera, high-resolution thermal camera, and portable digital microscope with fluorescence filters/illuminators. 💡 Results and Discussion: The approach demonstrates improved geometry reconstruction, enhanced printability assessment, and insightful analysis of deposition dynamics for the current layer. Additionally, it enables non-destructive identification of cells within the construct, with resolution limitations acknowledged. 🔬 Conclusion: The development of advanced monitoring systems is crucial for enhancing replicability and reproducibility in bioprinting, facilitating industry adoption. The method, offering non-destructive and cost-effective monitoring, aligns with the need for in-line control methods in bioprinting processes. 🚀 Join us as we advance bioprinting technology towards more efficient and reliable solutions in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. #horizonEU #Bioprinting #Innovation #Research #TissueEngineering #BioProS
