Cargill Inc., the largest privately owned company in America, has enjoyed a biblical bonanza – but leaner times loom. The company doesn't release publicly its financials, but I took a loot at a copy of its accounts. It made $2.48 billion in net income in its 2024 fiscal year, less than half the record of about $6.7 billion it made in 2021-2022, and the lowest since the 2015-2016 fiscal year. In commodities, the years of plenty are always followed by the years of little. Whatever route it chooses, it’s clear that Cargill needs new thinking as the cycle turns. Memo to Wall Street: Hardware is hard! That's what I tried to emphasize in my column about Nvidia's earnings on Wednesday. A temporary blip in the production of the new Blackwell chip does not warrant shares dropping in after hours trading and then again on Thursday. Nor does 121% (!!) revenue growth, year-on-year. Let's be reasonable here. Read more over on Bloomberg Opinion: #tech #ai #nvidia

I wrote about how Google and Microsoft can learn a thing or two from Mark Zuckerberg, and how he’s showing the technology’s impact on his own business. The lesson: eat your own dogfood. Column here: https://lnkd.in/ezJPdE2t?

Points of Return on how different universities are approaching the question of whether they should divest from companies doing business with Israel. It's a fascinating and difficult problem, much like the Middle East conflict itself:

Some called it a capitulation or a mea culpa, but I don't see it that way. Mark Zuckerberg's letter to Rep Jim Jordan's House Judiciary Committee was his attempt to reset some ground rules around how the White House can lean on social networks. He's wise to do so, no matter who ends up President. While it looks like the Meta founder made key concessions, giving Jordan's flimsy investigation its "ah ha!" moment, there were no new revelations. ↠ The company has already expressed regret over how it handled specific stories about President Biden's son, Hunter. ↠ It has also previously stated that it felt the White House's meddling over COVID-19 content stepped over the line, which it certainly did.
