Who was Marcus Garvey? And why is his legacy still so important today? Read on to learn more, or register for our upcoming roundtable discussion now: https://hubs.li/Q02RLMdf0 Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was a Black political activist, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator. Despite his massive popularity, this Jamaican born international leader was wrongfully sentenced to prison by the U.S. government on trumped-up mail-fraud charges. While exoneration efforts began immediately and have continued since his sentencing, a new groundswell movement for Garvey’s posthumous pardon is underway—led by his nonagenarian, still-spirited son, Julius Garvey. On October 8, join Dr. Julius Garvey, plus Black publishers, national thought-leaders, and essay contributors to discuss the exciting new anthology, Justice for Marcus Garvey: Look for Me in the Whirlwind. Foreword by Ta’Nehisi Coates. Roundtable voices include: Troy Johnson, Diane Richards, Paul Coates, Dr. Goulda Downer, Safiya Parker, JD and Dr. Ayo Sekai. Learn how you can join the next generation of justice activists and keep Garvey’s legacy alive! Register now: https://hubs.li/Q02RLMdf0

Justice for Marcus Garvey! This is not the first time we have heard a call for JUSTICE FOR MARCUS GARVEY, but hopefully, it will be an added mantra to strengthen that call with the release of this new book by his son, Dr. Julius Garvey, MD. Like the people on this panel, Garvey was a visionary. He bore many names, including the Redeemer, the Black Moses, Nationalist, and Pan-Africanist. All are aptly attributed. Two things call to my bones: Marcus Garvey, one of seven (7) Jamaican 🇯🇲National Heroes, and Marcus Garvey, and Publisher of the WATCHMAN newspaper. As a native of Jamaica🇯🇲 and founder of the only known social science press by a Black publisher focused on the upliftment of Black scholarship (UWP), I am adding my voice to this powerful topic, JUSTICE FOR MARCUS GARVEY, among these dynamic co-panelists. I am steeped in the pride of this activist from St. Ann’s Bay Parish, who accomplished many things, including the #UNIA, that partly fueled the movement of Black culture. Having earned my PhD in Political Science, focused on Black Politics & International Relations, his impact is also grounded in my educational acumen. Join our virtual discussion on October 8, 2024, as we take a deep dive look at the book JUSTICE FOR GARVEY, written by his son, Dr. Julius Garvey, and published by Broadleaf Books Event Registration Open!
