Remembering the Phillips Petroleum Complex Explosion: 35 Years Later Oct. 23 will mark the 35th anniversary of the tragic explosion at the Phillips Petroleum Complex in Pasadena, Texas. This incident, which claimed 23 lives and injured 314 others, serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of process safety in our industry. The incident lead to the creation of the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center. Trish Kerin and Traci Purdum discuss the tragedy and lessons learned. Listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/g2PN-hrp Key takeaways: 1. The explosion led to significant improvements in process safety, influencing the development of OSHA's Process Safety Management standard and the EPA's Risk Management Program. 2. The Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M, founded in memory of one of the victims, continues to play a crucial role in advancing process safety education and research. 3. Proper isolation procedures and dedicated fire protection systems are vital lessons learned from this incident. However, even today, not all companies fully understand or implement these crucial safety measures. As we remember this tragic event, let's recommit ourselves to making safety second nature in our workplaces. What steps are you taking to ensure process safety in your organization? #ProcessSafety #IndustrialSafety #LessonsLearned #NeverForget

Day 2 of the Reuters Industrial Decarbonization North America 2024 in Pittsburgh. In a Day 1 morning session, Braskem North America chief touted government incentives on one hand to encourage demand for sustainable materials while also calling on government to ease regulatory burdens. From Mark Nikolich, CEO of Braskem North America: "We need incentives, disincentives as industry. I think consumers need incentives and disincentives. And I've never been into regulation, I've never been into tax. It's always been a bad word in my vocabulary. But we need these tools." Curious what others think of this. Is it reasonable to ask for the government's help on one hand while also bemoaning regulations?
