We hope Takanori Takebe is proud of his Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science, but we wonder if he’s even prouder of his latest award: an Ig Nobel Prize, bestowed for “achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think.” Presented by actual Nobel Prize–winning scientists, Takebe found out on September 12 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that he would be receiving the Ig Nobel award for research into what has been colloquially called “butt-breathing” – i.e. whether there might be an “alternative” way to deliver oxygen to the bloodstream. Takebe, born in Japan and now Director for Commercial Innovation at Cincinnati Children's, received the 2024 prize from The Vilcek Foundation for developing vascularized three-dimensional human organoid tissue from stem cells that can be transplanted in humans. While his study into less-than-typical channels for oxygen might prompt a chuckle, even the awarders of the Ig Nobel Prize know that the research has potentially life-saving implications, possibly helping people survive low-oxygen conditions that would otherwise be fatal. 🔗 Read on to learn more about Takebe’s latest prize and all his other wonderful achievements: https://lnkd.in/ehS_79GG #Science #IgNobelPrize #STEMcells #Oxygen #Research #BiomedicalScience #OrganoidTissue #MIT #NobelPrize

Go ahead, crack a joke. Butt seriously, this research from Dr. Takanori Takebe at Cincinnati Childrens and the Tokyo Medical and Dental University might save lives someday by helping people when they cannot get enough oxygen via their lungs. Congrats on your #IgNobelPrize! https://lnkd.in/g3Zg_Jmu Subscribe for more updates from our Research Horizons science blog: https://lnkd.in/guTH5r_c
