The emergence of biomarkers for different #MS mechanisms is refining diagnosis, but current phenotypic descriptors don't reflect the heterogeneity of biological processes that underlie the spectrum of clinical disease. Carrie Hersh, DO, MSc, FAAN and a team of experts make the case for a shift from MS categorization based on clinical phenotype to a greater focus on underlying disease mechanisms. For the first time, a medication (BTK inhibitor, tolebrutinib), has been shown to delay confirmed disability progression in people with nonrelapsing secondary progressive #multiplesclerosis. Robert Fox, MD, chair of the study’s global steering committee, presented the phase 3 HERCULES trial data at ECTRIMS . Experts at #ECTRIMS2024 unveiled the first update to the McDonald criteria for #MS diagnosis since 2017. Highlights include the use of central vein sign and paramagnetic rim lesions as imaging biomarkers, integration of the optic nerve as a fifth topography in MS diagnosis and the ability to make a diagnosis in an asymptomatic patient. Committee member, Daniel Ontaneda, MD, PhD, sounds off on the significance of this work. #CleClinicNeuro #MSresearch ECTRIMS

~85% of #MS cases initially present in patients 18-50 years old. Guidelines for diagnosis and management have been designed primarily for this typical age range, and little has been published specifically on patients who fall outside it. To address this gap, Americas Committee for Treatment & Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS) spearheaded a group to provide guidance on diagnosing suspected MS in pediatric patients and in individuals older than 50. This 19 member international committee, led by Le Hua, MD, just published their findings in 𝘑𝘈𝘔𝘈 𝘕𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺. Check them out: https://lnkd.in/g7625P3t. #CleClinicNeuro #MS #MSresearch
