In the below simulation, we are using Ansys Fluent to simulate liquid coating during a battery cell manufacturing process. Quick & precise simulation using the volume of fluid (VOF) model enables optimization of the lip shape at different conditions for uniform coating, avoiding possible failures such as ribbing, edge defect, and air-bubble entrapment. Battery modeling simulation is critical as OEMs and sustainability efforts worldwide drive demand for batteries across numerous applications. Using simulation early in the design stage can help facilitate faster design cycles for battery manufacturers and suppliers. Have you heard of the tombstone effect? This is a phenomenon in electronic assemblies where the surface mount components are partially or completely lifted from one of their copper pads during reflow soldering resulting in poor or no electronic contact. This can happen for several reasons: when the amount of solder is not equal on both sides of the surface mount component, unequal heating from the bottom leading to different surface tension forces, different surface properties of the component leading to different wetting properties. These improper process conditions can result in a lift up (or tombstoning) of one side of the component. You can use Ansys Fluent to simulate tombstoning using the Volume Of Fluids (VOF) model with incorporated temperature-dependent material properties, including surface tension, wetting angles or viscosity together with Fluent's dynamic mesh capabilities.
