  • Conservation and Coexistence in Topón, Mexico🐊 In the quaint fishing village of Topón, Mexico, the community once thrived on shrimp fishing. However, climate change, deforestation, and overfishing led to a sharp decline in shrimp populations, forcing the villagers to make a tough decision: adapt or seek an unexpected ally. Enter the crocodiles. Over the past few years, a collaborative project by Conservation International, the Global Environment Facility, and the Mexican government (CONANP - Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas) transformed the fishermen's relationship with these once-feared reptiles. Crocodiles are now recognized for their vital role in maintaining the estuary's health, regulating oxygen levels in the water, and supporting the shrimp ecosystem. We're excited to announce the MEx30x30 project—an $18 million initiative focused on conserving Mexico’s biodiversity by empowering communities and their protected areas. Endorsed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature and Conservation International, the largest project in the GEF’s Global Biodiversity Framework Fund to date will help address the substantial funding gap Mexico’s protected area system faces. MEx30x30 will: -Boost the National Commission for Protected Areas (CONANP)'s capacity to secure diverse funding. -Leverage the Project Finance for Permanence approach to secure long-term financial support for the protection of natural areas. -Invest in conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of new protected areas and Areas Voluntarily Designated for Conservation (ADVCs). MEx30x30 will enhance the management of over 25 million hectares of terrestrial and marine protected areas, mitigate 9.43 million metric tons of carbon emissions, and provide gender-equitable benefits for 163,293 people. Given that 51% of Mexico’s land belongs to Indigenous Peoples and local communities —who steward 83% of the country’s biodiversity—supporting these communities is crucial for hitting Mexico’s goals of conserving 30% of the territory by 2030.

  • 🌍 Exciting Milestone for Fiji's Biodiversity 🇫🇯 We're thrilled to announce the launch of the "Safeguarding Marine and Terrestrial Biodiversity in Fiji (SAMBIO)" project. This five-year initiative, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by Conservation International (CI), represents a collaborative effort between the Fiji Government, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and other key partners. The SAMBIO Fiji project, with a $7.2 million investment, will address critical threats to our biodiversity, focusing on both terrestrial and marine ecosystems across Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, and priority maritime islands. By protecting key biodiversity areas and important bird areas, this project aims to restore degraded ecosystems, halt biodiversity loss, and strengthen pathways for sustainable ecosystem services. Hon. Sakiusa Tubuna, Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, highlighted the vital role of Fiji's biodiversity in ecosystem functioning, food security, and cultural identity. This project aligns with Fiji’s Biodiversity and Strategic Plan 2020–2025 and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework: https://ow.ly/o7lU50T827b We are optimistic that this partnership will bring transformative action and secure a vibrant future for Fiji's natural heritage. Together, we can protect Fiji's biodiversity for generations to come! #Biodiversity #Fiji #Conservation #GEF #SAMBIOFiji #EnvironmentalProtection #Sustainability

  • 🌍 In 2022, with the support of the Global Environment Facility and the Allen Institute of Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2), Conservation International introduced the EarthRanger system to Limpopo National Park. This cutting-edge technology provides real-time insights into park activities, from wildlife movements to ranger patrols, revolutionizing our conservation efforts. EarthRanger represents a significant leap forward. With new infrastructure and cellular towers, we’re moving towards 24/7 monitoring of nearly 90% of the park. This dynamic platform not only enhances our operational awareness but also fosters collaboration with neighboring conservation areas like #KrugerNationalPark — a crucial element in combating the poaching crisis. The stakes are high in places like Massingir, where local populations face severe poverty. For them, #poaching is often a matter of survival, driven by crime syndicates exploiting the vulnerable. With EarthRanger, we’re not just monitoring wildlife; we’re protecting communities and preserving ecosystems. • On this #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we honor the resilience, leadership, and innovation of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and Local Communities (LCs) leading the way through the Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI). This project, funded by the Global Environment Facility and led by Conservation International and IUCN, witnessed how IPs and LCs have overcome challenges—navigating compliance, financial systems, and leadership transitions—to drive impactful conservation strategies. Despite obstacles like fiscal management hurdles, governmental shifts, and evolving leadership, these communities remain dedicated to protecting their lands and cultures. Through ICI's planning grants, we've collaborated to bridge capacity gaps, align strategies with cultural priorities, and enhance global biodiversity. As we continue to decolonize data practices and foster collaboration, we're excited to see new partnerships and initiatives emerging. Today, we celebrate these successes and reaffirm our commitment to supporting Indigenous leadership and inclusive conservation. Together, let's ensure Indigenous voices are at the forefront of global environmental solutions. 📢 🌱BREAKING: With less than 100 days until the UN Biodiversity #COP16, I am thrilled to share that over 130 businesses with revenues of $1.1 trillion are calling for ambitious government action to accelerate the implementation of the #BiodiversityPlan and halt nature loss this decade.   These businesses have come together with a united voice to make it clear that the protection, restoration and sustainable use of nature is critical to their future and that collective action is vital. They are calling for clear regulatory frameworks and incentive mechanisms to improve corporate accountability and create a level playing field for businesses and financial institutions.   Especially given the polarized political landscape, this is an important moment to show courage and direction and one we hope will resonate with governments and ministries worldwide. To support this call for renewed policy ambition, the Business for Nature coalition has developed 20 specific policy asks that define how practically the level of ambition businesses are calling for could be implemented. A huge thank you to the many organizations who provided input and feedback.   Businesses are starting to transform their operations and value chain with companies developing and publishing credible nature strategies (https://lnkd.in/en-Kai9f). But they can only go so far. The transformation needed within the private sector will only happen at the required scale and speed if governments urgently adopt, implement and enforce the policies needed to enable business action.    🔗 Find out more: bit.ly/BizCOP16

The Kenya Wildlife for Conservation Project; "Advancing Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) management effectiveness in Kenya through an integrated approach", also known as the GEF-8 Kenya seeks to build upon the successes of the Global Wildlife Program from GEF-6 and GEF-7 to transform systems that are driving wildlife and biodiversity loss. In the year 2023, Kenya was among the countries that applied to be part of the program and was officially qualified and included in the program on 5th February, 2024. This project will be implemented by Conservation International (CI) and executed by the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife (State Department for Wildlife), it's Agencies and other partners in the sector. Together with colleague PS for Environment & Climate Change, Dr. Eng. Festus Ngeno, we were joined by the DG - Kenya Wildlife Service, CEO/Director- Wildlife Research & Training Institute Kenya, CEOs- Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association, WWF-Kenya, the Country Director- The Nature Conservancy in Africa for an inception workshop that marked the start of the project preparation phase for the Kenya project. The meeting brought together technical teams; both State and Non-State actors. I stressed on the need to align the project with the Kenya Kwanza government manifesto geared towards strengthening community-led conservation to address Human-Wildlife Conflicts and support for livelihoods. The project envisages that by supporting strategies for the coexistence of human and wildlife populations, the primary objective is to address HWC as a driver of biodiversity loss. #plan2action #4wildlifeandpeople
