Are convenience store loyalty programs optional or essential? At a recent Convenience Leaders Vision Group (CLVG) meeting, the topic of loyalty programs was explored with several participants emphasizing their role in customer retention and experience differentiation. Members reflected on their efficacy and evolution in the digital age, stressing that loyalty is about more than rewards, it's about connecting with customers and influencing their behaviors through unique offerings and strategic use of technology. The Vision Group Network Co-Founder Roy Strasburger added a cautionary note about loyalty programs not cannibalizing regular sales, underscoring the delicate balance required in loyalty program design. He said, “You have to be careful that you're not giving away things to your regular customers that they would normally buy.” Read the full discussion in the newly released CLVG Vision Report, “Near and Far: Looking at Global Convenience Retailing.” You’ll be fascinated with the Vision Report’s full “In The Room” and the meeting summary in “CLVG Views.” ➡ Download: https://lnkd.in/g5z52uau #conveniencestores #futureofconvenience #globalretail #loyaltyprograms myra Eva Strasburger

“Capital, for me, is a big deal. I can't make a lot of mistakes here experimenting with some of these ideas that make sense conceptually but aren't proven,” shared Donald Rhoads, CEO of The Convenience Group. “I would love to have a whole bunch of kids hanging out at my stores drinking beverages, but again, I have to weigh the ROI on that because my parking stalls are really important to me.” Joe Sheetz, Executive Vice Chairman, Sheetz shared a similar sentiment “I'm not going to say that we're in the business or have the strategy of trying to get people to hang out, but I will say that we will probably never build another location without a seating area.” CLVG members and guests explored the shift from transactional to experiential customer engagements in convenience stores, focusing on the challenges and opportunities of creating spaces where customers can work or socialize. “We found that each incremental change isn't likely to give you what you want or expect, but when you put a lot of those things together and change lots of different things, you might achieve a breakthrough. It comes with a lot of trial and error. You're never going to hit it right on the first time out. You really have to stick with it in order to get there,” says Mark Samuels, MBA, EVP of Convenience Retailing at Dash In/The Wills Group. Convenience Leaders Vision Group (CLVG) members and guests highlighted the importance of innovation and the value of adapting global insights to local markets. They shared experiences of learning from international practices and highlighted the need for an open-minded approach to integrating new ideas into their business models. “Our companies are on the path of growth, and in a lot of the towns and areas where we’re trying to get permitted currently, those cities are asking us, and want to understand, what we’re doing to make our sites more sustainable. And, of course, I think it is high on a lot of people’s list, the consumers’ list, of being a good actor today and doing your part. So, I’d like to have a conversation around reasonable, easy things that as retailers we could do, that are low hanging fruit and then what’s that next level of sustainability measures we should be thinking about.” -- CLVG Member Kevin Smartt, president and CEO of TXB . The April CLVG meeting tackled this topic and it is covered in the recently released Vision Report, “Envisioning Sustainability in Convenience Store Design.” Based on the group’s latest quarterly virtual meeting, you’ll find a comprehensive report addressing sustainable store design, ROI and customer opinion. Read “The Views” for CLVG members’ thought-provoking points of viewon the balance between sustainability, weighing the ROI of sustainability efforts and the potential for long-term gains through energy savings and incentives.
