What does it take to get a full-time job in dance academia? Because job security can be hard to come by in the dance world, there’s an understandable appeal to full-time professorships in college and university dance programs. The path to get there can seem elusive, however—and the requirements of the job extend beyond teaching and choreography. Two dance professors—Jason Ohlberg, Skidmore College associate professor and associate chair, and Shannon Johnson Grayson, assistant professor of practice at University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance—share their journeys to working in academia. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/ejDPhA6a 📸 : Skidmore College students in Ohlberg’s “Hinterland.” Photo by Gary Gold, Courtesy Skidmore College. 📝 : Chava Pearl Lansky #DanceAcademia #DanceProfessor #Dancer Media descriptions: (1) Four dancers on stage at Skidmore College. Despite all the hours young dancers spend in the studio, for many coming out of high school, the idea of dance as an academic discipline—an intellectual as much as a physical pursuit—can be unfamiliar, even mysterious. What do college dance programs actually require? What do students’ days look like? Here, four college dance majors take us through a day in the life: https://lnkd.in/egASaRU7 📸 : Getty Images 📝: Annie Kloppenberg #CollegeDance #CollegeDancer #DITL University of Iowa Purchase College, SUNY Bates College Emory University Media description: (1) A female in jeans and a plaid flannel wears a tan backpack and faces away from the camera, looking at an archway in an ornate building. 🎞️ #filmbreakfriday: After years of staring at a screen editing films, Berlin-based filmmaker Boris Seewald felt compelled to work with a more tactile medium and turned to painting. He dug up unused footage from his previous dance films and employed an animation technique called rotoscoping (think A-ha’s “Take On Me” music video) to translate the footage into a series of paintings by projecting still images of the video onto paper, which he would then use as a guide to paint the two dancers in his short. However, this was not a solo project; Seewald enlisted the help of his wife and then-3-year-old daughter to paint roughly 1,250 images for the film! For music, he chose the track “Disco,” from the album Moods by his longtime collaborator, composer Ralf Hildenbeutel. The rotoscoping is based on performances by Althea Corlett and Simone Schmidt.
