The DCG at Augusta University is so grateful for the support that our students and employees have received. From the Georgia Dental Association (see story below) to the American Dental Association to the Georgia Board of Regents—including our friends at Gordon State College—to local businesses, organizations, and individuals, AU dental students were well cared for. About us
In 1965, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved the establishment of a School of Dentistry on the campus of what was then known as the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta, Georgia. In February 2011, the Board of Regents approved the institution’s proposal to change its name to Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU) and to change the name of the dental school to the College of Dental Medicine. In January 2013, Georgia Health Sciences University and Augusta State University officially merged as mandated by the Board of Regents and we are now called Augusta University. As the newly merged institution, we offer more than 110 degree programs and has more than 9,000 students in nine colleges. The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University is the state’s only dental school. The first dental students were accepted into the dental program in 1969, earning their Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees in June 1973. Since that first class, the college has awarded 2,060 DMD degrees, and more than 600 certificates of training in advanced dental education programs. The College of Dental Medicine offers a four-year program leading to a doctor of dental medicine degree. Dual programs in oral biology also are available. A DCG dental education emphasizes early exposure to patients. Students begin treating patients as early as sophomore year, enjoying a seamless transition from lecture halls and laboratories to clinics. The fourth year of education is devoted almost solely to patient care. Senior students also practice their skills in clinics and facilities for eight week rotations throughout the state.

We are so thrilled for the DCG alumni who were named winners and finalists for the Cyber City Community Choice Awards, sponsored by The Augusta Chronicle. DCG grads swept the Dental Clinic category. Jordan Family Dentistry, owned by Dr. Melissa Jordan (DMD, 2011), was named the winner of Cyber City's Community Choice for local dental clinic. In addition to Jordan, the practice employs several other Augusta University graduates, including dental hygienists Amie Thomas, Kristy Lewis and Sharon McGowan. The two runners-up, Serenity Dental and Summerville Dentistry, are also both owned by DCG graduates: • Dr. Eric Sterett (DMD, 2009) owns and operates Serenity Dental. Sterett is a triple-Jag with a B.S. in Biology completed in 1998 and a B.S. in Nursing completed in 2000. • Summerville Dentistry is the office of Dr. Scott Wingard (DMD, 1999), Dr. Sherilyn Harper (DMD, 2021), Dr. Ariel K. Bish (DMD, 2019) and Dr. Josi Giovinazzo (DMD, 2023). DCG alumni also dominated the Orthodontic Clinic category. Powell Orthodontics, run by a father-son team of dual DCG grads, clinched the winner's position for Cyber City's Community Choice for local orthodontic clinic. Dr. Steven Powell (DMD, 1981) is a triple Jag, having finished his B.S. in Biology at AU in 1977 and his orthodontics residency in 1988. Son Dr. Robert Powell (DMD, 2018) is a double-Jag, having completed an MBA at AU in 2014, and he also serves as a part-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics. The two runners-up, Carter Orthodontics and Rogers & Andrews Orthodontics, are also both owned by DCG graduates: • Dr. David Carter (DMD, 1988) owns and operates Carter Orthodontics. He completed his orthodontics residency in 1991 and previously served as a DCG associate clinical professor in the Department of Orthodontics. • Dr. Lee Andrews (DMD, Orthodontics Residency, 2006) owns and operates Rogers & Andrews. Rogers & Andrews was founded by Dr. Michael Rogers, a graduate of The DCG's orthodontics residency program. Congratulations to the Cyber City Community Choice Awards honorees! #Dentistry #DentalSchool #AlumniSuccess #JaguarNation #LikeNoOther #CommunityChoice #Awards

Members of the Georgia General Assembly House Of Representatives (GA House) Health Appropriations Subcommittee and of the GA House Health Committee toured the Augusta University health sciences campus on Sept 17. Dean Nancy Young hosted the tour through The DCG, beginning with an introduction and question and answer session in the fifth floor conference room, then winding down through the Senior Clinic, the Thomas P. Hinman Simulation Lab, Sterilization, Dispensary, the Surgical Suite, and the haptic training room where representatives tried their hand at preparing a tooth. These in-person experiences let visitors receive a more complete understanding of what we do at The DCG, how our students learn and succeed, and what facilities, technology, and people power we need to provide the best educational experience we can for our students, residents, faculty, and staff. #Dentistry #DentalSchool #PublicService #PublicHealth #JaguarNation #LegislativeAgenda #ElectedRepresentatives #LikeNoOther
