Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the Tech + Society conference at UCLA Anderson School of Management in collaboration with Easton Technology Management Center. This conference opened my eyes even more with the use cases of AI and Autonmous Vehicles. We are truly living in an interesting time and the next 5-10 years will look exponentially different when these technologies become more refined and incorporated in our daily lifes. As I progress through my UCLA Anderson School of Management EMBA program, obtaining a specialization in Technology Management is a essential to further my understanding in technology and doing business in the future. While these new technologies are exciting they also need to be met with understanding the externalities of usage. Unintended consequences with these technologies can lead to massive issues. Listening to speakers Sal Khan , Wei Luo and Dee Dee Myers demonstrated the usage of these technologies in different industries but also the shared concern of safety in use. Each speaker showcased the force that AI and AV can have within their industries and how it can translate from business, personal and government. I left with one critical question from the conference that will be a discussion point for some time.. How can AV and AI impact your business and personal life? I feel energized every time I visit the UCLA Anderson School of Management campus, and this morning was particularly exciting as I attended the fantastic Tech + Society conference, themed “AI: Transforming the Future.” We’re all more knowledgeable about #AI today than we were a year ago. What really matters now is identifying problems in our society and figuring out how we can solve them using #ArtificialIntelligence. The conference was focused on AI technology use cases across key sectors, featuring an amazing lineup of speakers: 💡 Education: Khan Academy's Founder & CEO, Sal Khan, shared how they democratized the learning process by creating virtual tutors with #Khanmigo.ai. My favorite quote from Sal: “This is one of the most exciting times in world history to be alive and embrace AI to amplify #positive #intent!” 💡 Transportation: NVIDIA's VP of Autonomous Vehicles, Wei Luo, spoke about the adoption of #AV technology, driven by two main factors: #safety and the ability of AV tech to #adapt to harsh environments and weather. I must admit, I haven’t yet been brave enough to take a Waymo robotaxi. I believe there’s still work to be done to build #trust in this area. 😊 💡 Government: Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom and Director of Business and Economic Development, shared how #California is supporting AI #innovation to solve real-life problems. Seventy percent of the top 50 AI companies worldwide are based in #CA, the fifth-largest economy on the planet! My favorite quote from Dee Dee: “You can do more than making money with AI; you can make the world a better place”. In other words, “do good while doing well with AI”. Brilliant! Congratulations to Terry Kramer, Michael Masserman, Sagar Pande and the entire Easton Technology Management Center team for putting together such a great event! Important learnings at the UCLA Anderson School of Management Easton Technology Management Center Tech and Society Conference this week: the important role that AI is playing in critical services such as education and transportation, enabling greater levels of personalization, customization, and accessibility (lower cost, and flexibility of location), the way that innovators are seeking to anticipate potential negative externalities that are fundamental to their product development activities – –considering the quantity and type of data being used to train models, safety standards always being met and the important role of job training and reskilling. A special special, thank you to our outstanding speakers: Sal Khan of the Khan Academy who described the powerful capabilities of the new AI tutor, Khanmigo, Wei Luo from NVIDIA who provided invaluable insights about the complexity and important safety standards required to power autonomous vehicles, and Dee Dee Myers of the State of California describing methods to ensure California continues to be a leader in technology innovation while ensuring safe and effective use are a norm. She reminded the rising leaders in the audience of the ability and importance to “do well and do good.“ And a special thank you to our moderators who set a high bar for the exchange and learnings during the sessions: Michael Masserman and Sagar Pande.
