The Aspen Institute's Energy & Environment Program addresses critical energy, environmental, & climate change issues.
About us
The Energy and Environment Program (EEP) addresses critical energy, environmental, and climate change issues through non-partisan, non-ideological convening, with the specific intent of bringing together diverse stakeholders to improve the process and progress of policy-level dialogue. This enables EEP to sit at a critical intersection in the conversation and bring together diverse groups of expert stakeholders. In addition to energy and environmental policy, which the program has been addressing for several decades, EEP is now actively and purposefully engaging in climate change policy – mitigating the effects of climate change, adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change, and helping to build relationships for cooperation needed to achieve these goals amongst people and nations.

Last week, our President and CEO Ingrid Irigoyen traveled to #Tokyo for the Global Maritime Forum’s Annual Summit 2024. While there, she hosted ZEMBA’s booth at the GMF Trade Fair which provided initiatives in the maritime space like ZEMBA the opportunity to showcase how they are advancing #sustainability objectives. For each booth, graphic illustrators put together beautiful hand drawn boards to describe how these initiatives create impact, check out ZEMBA’s below!

Mexico is charting a new path on climate under President Claudia Sheinbaum, with Environment Secretary Alicia Bárcena outlining an ambitious agenda, writes Justin Worland. Plans include ramping up renewable energy, decarbonizing state-owned companies, and targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. Bárcena emphasizes a shift toward sustainability and a rethinking of development paradigms. #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #Mexico - María Ortiz Pérez https://lnkd.in/e8XWsd4H

Such an honor being part of #CityLabCDMX organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies and The Aspen Institute in my hometown- Mexico City 🇲🇽 ! The event was a vibrant exchange of practices and ideas, and a fertile ground for relationships of collaboration to flourish! 🍎 I had the absolute pleasure of moderating a panel on Mexico's groundbreaking law to guarantee the right to healthy food to all citizens- as a matter of public health, but also of dignity- with Alejandro Calvillo, Senator Ana Lilia Rivera and Secretary Julia Alvarez Icaza. Other key messages for me: 👶 Mayor of Mexico City Clara Brugada highlighting that in order to fight gender inequality, care should be a duty of the State, and shouldn't be left to the private sphere alone. 🏞️ Fernanda Canales sharing the importance of changing public space to generate a sense of community in the border between Mexico and the US, and to generate ownership of public space to restore a sense of pride and local identity to these communities 🌽 Fatmata Binta Jalloh sharing that food is powerful and a bridge to build trust in communities ♻️ Enrique Norten highlighting that change in cities is good, and that we can transform old public spaces and create new opportunities that will match contemporary needs. ❤️ Daphne Lundi and her call to generate public policies for care in cities, as providing infrastructure for care is providing infrastructure for people’s well being. 🥳 And a huge shout out to my colleagues at Aspen -Bunmi Akinnusotu, Graham Veysey, Ava Hartmann, Jacqueline Olivas-Sison, Dulcy Kenner and so many more- who worked tirelessly to make this event a success!

At Aspen Ideas Climate in 2023, professor Susan Crawford spoke about the inaccuracy of FEMA's Flood Insurance Rate Maps, sharing that "six million additional houses should be in the floodplain than the FEMA maps reflect right now." Fast forward to last month's Hurricane Helene, which wrought catastrophic flooding in places like rural North Carolina and Tennessee—places that fall outside of high-risk zones designated by the federal government's flood maps. In a new article for National Geographic, journalist Meryl Davids Landau explores the nation's erroneous flood maps after having heard Crawford's remarks back in 2023. Read the full story at the link below.

Had a great conversation today with Siaka Stevens about the exciting vision for Sherbro Island City at #CityLabCDMX in Mexico City. The project is a bold and transformative development that could bring significant opportunities for sustainable growth and economic development to Sierra Leone and to the African continent. As we discussed the potential for green infrastructure, renewable energy, and responsible tourism built on top of core sustainable industries, it was clear that this initiative has the power to create a lasting positive impact on the next century while preserving the natural beauty of the island. Looking forward to seeing how Sherbro Island City evolves and contributes to a sustainable future! #SustainableDevelopment #GreenInfrastructure #ResponsibleTourism #ClimateAction #SherbroIslandCity

Our very own Laura Schifter on the impacts of climate change on children's education: missed school days and mental health risks due to extreme weather, hotter schools, and more will affect students' longterm learning. But we can equip schools to be a part of climate solutions and better prepare students for their future on a changing planet. 🏫 🌍 https://lnkd.in/eJCdFZDN The Aspen Institute #ClimateEducation #thisisplaneted
