  • In 2009, David Towbridge, a retired mechanic from Texas, was in search of a used battery to explore his interests in off-grid power and how to maximize its energy storage use across several applications. Ironically, Towbridge discovered that what he was in search of was owned by a local high-school teacher, who just so happened to be getting rid of a small, 60Ah battery that he used for demonstrations in the classroom. Fast forward to 2024 – 15 years later – and the battery that Towbridge serendipitously purchased over a decade ago is still going strong. Today, the same battery that was previously used for educational purposes is now being used to power Mr. Towbridge’s cargo trailer, or as he likes to warmly refer to as, “his mini workshop”. In years past, the battery has also provided dependable performance to operate his motorboat as well as the AM/FM radio in his vehicle. “I initially purchased the battery as a learning tool to see how much power I could get out of it by testing it in various applications,” said Towbridge. “Now, I use it in my cargo trailer; the trailer is designed with cedar wood and the interior is insulated so it’s a nice set up for me. My goal is to use it to camp and fish down by the coast or on the beach.” This seemingly ageless battery is the PowerSafe® SBS 60 battery from EnerSys. Engineered in 2002 – over five years prior to when Towbridge made his infamous purchase – the PowerSafe® SBS 60 battery is an Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) battery that features a proprietary Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology to deliver twice the power and three times the life of conventional flooded lead acid batteries. Maintenance-free and highly durable due to its military-inspired design, PowerSafe® batteries are primarily used in telecom, UPS and industrial applications. For Towbridge, he credits the battery’s longevity to proper care and following the manufacturer’s guidelines for charging and installation. “Never fully drain a battery or push it beyond its limit of operation; that’s the ‘rule of thumb’ I’ve always practiced with my PowerSafe® battery,” added Towbridge. “The charge controller is set to keep my battery at about 13 volts as to not overcharge it and once it gets to float mode it levels out. The battery terminals have never corroded so I haven’t had to do much in terms of upkeep – this battery has exceeded all my expectations, and I look forward to seeing what I can do with it next.” This year marks 22-years of operation for Mr. Towbridge’s PowerSafe® SBS 60 battery.
