With $16 billion worth of demand for future low-emission products, the World Economic Forum's First Movers Coalition (FMC) is showing us the power of green procurement! In its first status report since its conception in 2021, the FMC report details how its 99 corporate members and 13 country partners are driving emissions reductions by giving innovative producers the confidence to invest in low-emissions industry. The report estimates that its members’ green procurement pledges will help avoid 31 million tons (Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions throughout seven highly emissions intensive sectors like aviation, cement and concrete, shipping, and steel by 2030. Building renewable energy for the green transition will require a lot of carbon intensive materials like cement and steel. So how do we build wind turbines and solar panels without increasing emissions from heavy industry? Groupe VALOREM and Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies show us one way. At Groupe VALOREM's wind farm in Jazeneuil, France, they’ve poured the world’s first clinker-free wind turbine foundation. By decarbonizing the production of building materials like cement and steel, the green energy transition doesn’t need to increase heavy industrial emissions. 🍃Green hydrogen🍃 is a promising decarbonization solution, but only if produced cleanly and responsibly, and utilized wisely. Rather than for heating homes and powering vehicles, Energy Innovation Policy and Technology LLC writes in Forbes that green hydrogen is better suited for the iron, steel and chemicals sectors in which alternatives like electrification are less viable. 🌟 Exciting news that you may have missed! 🌟 80 companies operating in Indonesia are part of the KADIN Net Zero Hub created by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, WWF Indonesia, and other organizations in 2022. The Hub works with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and the Science Based Targets initiative to provide businesses with the resources they need to calculate their emissions, set reduction targets and develop strategies to reach those targets. As a result of the hub: 🧮 40 companies completed bootcamps to learn how to calculate their emissions. 📉 30 have set net-zero emissions targets 🔬 20 made new commitments to the Science-Based Targets Initiative 🌏 ASEAN established a regional Net Zero Hub following the Indonesian hub model Read more information here: https://lnkd.in/g__eashU #NetZero #GreenIndustry #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #IndustrialDecarbonization #Indonesia #GHGProtocol #SBTi #WRIIndonesia #KADIN

Cement production releases carbon dioxide. But can we put carbon dioxide back into cement? That is the question one California-based startup is seeking to answer. Fortera has begun capturing carbon dioxide from a CalPortland cement kiln in Redding, California and is using it to make more cement. Once scaled up at the facility, Fortera expects to be producing cement that is 70% less emissions-intensive than conventional cement. 🎊 Exciting Announcement! 🎊 WRI’s Industrial Decarbonization team has unveiled its latest working paper focusing on the crucial topic of defossilizing of the U.S. chemical sector! The paper delves deep into the strategies, challenges, and opportunities surrounding the shift towards cleaner, more environmentally friendly practices within the chemical industry. Key highlights include: 📉 Achieving net-zero targets requires addressing the chemicals sector 🛢️ "Defossilizing" chemicals through non-fossil feedstocks can lead to net-zero emissions alongside other reduction strategies. ⚖️ Cutting chemical sector emissions can mitigate environmental justice concerns and local health impacts. ♻️ Alternative feedstocks for the chemical sector include waste biomass, captured carbon dioxide, clean hydrogen, and ethanol. 🧪 High-volume chemical production regions in the U.S. possess significant potential for non-fossil feedstocks, but capacity needs to be expanded. 📜 Government support for near-commercial technologies, industrial retrofits, and clean energy access can accelerate defossilization efforts.
