Diversity, equity and inclusion in public media.

About us

Catalyst was formed in 2019 during uncertain and disruptive times with the mission to champion BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) employees at GBH. Composed of BIPOC-identifying staff, Catalyst is dedicated to supporting initiatives that uphold the Foundation’s commitment to DEIA in programming, employee growth & development, and community engagement. Catalyst strives to create an environment that welcomes, nurtures, and retains BIPOC talent to further enrich GBH through diverse perspectives. As ambassadors on the ground, Catalyst engages employees of color, sharing feedback, concerns, and suggestions with the Office of Inclusion and Equity (OIE).

Catalyst will always celebrate and champion Black History. In honor of our resilient past and optimism towards our future, let us lead boldly and with compassion, remembering that our personal experiences should never limit our ability to empathize and support one another. Progress depends on all of us.   “In all things that are purely social we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress.” —Booker T. Archivist at GBH

On Tuesday, I had the incomparable honor of representing GBH Archives and the American Archive of Public Broadcasting at the American Documentary: Embracing Diversity in American Storytelling gala. Standing next to Alan Gevinson from the Library of Congress and being able to speak proudly about the work we have been and will continue to do to safeguard and allow access to countless hours of public media programs was definitely a pinch-me moment! I wish I could gracefully put into words and explain how much that moment meant to me. When I decided to move from Brazil to the States, I knew the journey wouldn’t be so easy. Pretty early on, I was made feel that I didn’t have the right accent, the right skin color, the right hair, the right background. I slowly started to hide my many identities as much as I could, hoping that one day I would be comfortable hiding. I’m grateful now, that day never came. Today, I stand prouder than ever to be one of “the others.” Proud that my work at GBH and with the AAPB is helping preserve stories by and for people like me. Proud of everything we have accomplished so far and proud to know that this is only the beginning! #pov #americandocumentary #diversityequityinclusionandbelonging #povgala

On October 31st, Catalyst, the Office of Inclusion and Equity (OIE), and Community Relations invited all GBH-ers to celebrate our Annual Día de los Muertos Ofrenda. Heartfelt speeches, delicious food, and the Mariachi Estrellas de Boston helped us honor lost loved ones, whose photos were displayed on an ofrenda. In the words of Mexican writer, Andrés Henestrosa: “No me llores, no, porque si lloras yo peno. En cambio si tú me cantas, yo siempre vivo y nunca muero.” ("Don’t cry for me because if you cry I grieve. Instead if you sing for me, I will always be alive and I will never die.")
