About us
We set the standards to measure and manage emissions. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) establishes comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas emissions from private and public sector operations, value chains and mitigation actions. Our standards, guidance, tools and training help business and government become more efficient, resilient and prosperous. GHG Protocol builds on a 20-year partnership between World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

One of the key topics that will be addressed in GHG Protocol's upcoming Land Sector and Removals standard and guidance will be separate accounting and reporting of CO2 removals from GHG emissions. Prepare for the publication by reading World Resources Institute's technical perspective on separate climate targets to understand how emissions reductions and removals can be be balanced to ensure carbon removal doesn't detract from emissions reductions.
Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) will be key to counterbalancing “residual emissions” from sources that are challenging to abate to achieve net zero and ultimately a net-negative future. However, the “net” in “net zero” can obscure very different levels of CDR and emissions reductions that can be used to reach net zero. Planning for high levels of CDR can be risky because of high costs, non-climate impacts, and uncertainty around technology development. Setting separate targets for carbon removal and emissions reductions can provide transparency around the level and role of CDR in meeting targets, and is a first step to avoiding over-reliance on CDR. Read how countries can set stronger, transparent separate targets for emissions reduction and carbon removal in the long-term strategies and nationally determined contributions they submit to the UNFCCC: https://bit.ly/3YHNiet #CarbonRemoval #CarbonDioxideRemoval #CDR #NetZero #SeparateTargets

GHG Protocol is pleased to share an update on the formation of our Technical Working Groups (TWGs): Following an open call for applications to join the TWGs for the corporate suite of standards updates, GHG Protocol received an overwhelming number of applications from an exceptionally high caliber and wide range of candidates. Significant progress on the composition of the TWGs has been made and the process is now in its final validation stages with individual applicants. A public announcement of the full list of TWG members, along with the applicable Terms of Reference for each body, will be made in September. All applicants not selected for TWG membership are invited to provide feedback on the draft standards via our public consultation process. GHG Protocol will also keep all TWG applications on file if a need to appoint additional members is identified during the standards update process. ➡️ We are accepting new TWG applications on a rolling basis.
