Following the regional's win, I am proud to announce the success of the National finals in where the team and I representing Sheffield Hallam University achieved 3rd place in the IMechE Design Challenge 2024!! It was an honour to travel to the IMechE HQ in London and be in such a unique environment, where I was able to see all the other competing universities and their devices in both the foundation challenge as well as the advanced challenge, where despite having the same objectives, there was many various designs of the vehicle to complete the challenge. This whole experience provided an insight into the real world of engineering, being in a team with multiple personalities and a large array of skills and to learn and grow over the duration of this challenge with each other proved to be invaluable. This whole journey would not be possible if it wasn't for the team of: Farhan Mohd Fuad, Luis Rodriguez, Lizzie Pope and Harris Nuthalapati as well as our supervisors, Dr. Jonathan Scholey and Dr. Stephen Agha. Thank you for the time and energy invested in this competition. Another thank you to IMechE and its wonderful hospitality in hosting this brilliant challenge in London!! ▪️ Yorkshire regional winners 🏆 ▪️ National 3rd place 🥉 Not too bad for our first attempt at this overall 😁

🚀 National Finals Success – 3rd Place! 🚀 I’m beyond excited to announce that our team from Sheffield Hallam University has secured third place in the IMechE Design Challenge National Finals in London! 🏅🎉 This is the first time Sheffield Hallam has ever placed in the national finals, and I couldn't be more proud of the incredible team that made it happen: Fahim Salik, Lizzie Pope, Harris Nuthalapati, and Luis Rodriguez. This journey began with us designing a fully autonomous vehicle, using only analog electronics—a challenge that required a deep understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals. The concept? To create a vehicle capable of starting on a target, hitting a wall then returning to the same target without any digital controllers or software. But this was more than just building a vehicle—it was a real test of problem-solving and collaboration. We faced numerous setbacks, from last-minute adjustments to dealing with components that didn’t behave as expected. Yet, with each challenge, we adapted, tested, and learned something new. That’s what made the experience so valuable for us as engineers. 💡 A Learning Journey: For me personally, acting as Project Manager was a huge learning curve. Managing the timelines, keeping the team motivated, and solving technical problems on the fly really pushed me to grow, both as a leader and an engineer. I learned so much from my teammates and gained new insights into project management and hands-on engineering. Securing third place nationally is a tremendous achievement, but beyond the result, I’m most proud of the journey we’ve taken as a team. It’s not every day you get to represent your university on a national stage and come away with a trophy! 🏆 A massive thank you to our supervisors, Dr. Jonathan Scholey and Dr. Stephen Agha, the IMechE, and everyone who supported me and the team throughout this competition. Looking forward to what’s next – but for now, celebrating this incredible moment! 🙌

2nd Year Mechanical Engineering Student at Sheffield Hallam University

🎉 We Won 🎉 On the 30th of May 2024, I had the incredible honor of leading a team of brilliant engineering students from Sheffield Hallam University to victory in the IMechE Design Challenge Regional Finals! 🏆 As Project Manager, I had the privilege of working with a talented and determined team consisting of Fahim Salik, Lizzie Pope, Harris Nuthalapati, and Luis Rodriguez. Together, we took on the challenge of designing a fully autonomous, self-contained vehicle using only analog electronics – a task that pushed us to our limits in creativity, precision, and problem-solving. This journey was anything but easy. We were months behind schedule, starting work only in February, while balancing our demanding coursework and deadlines. We also faced technical challenges right until the final moments – from critical issues with a DPDT switch to tweaking components under intense pressure. But through dedication and teamwork, we managed to overcome every obstacle and won 4 out of 5 categories at the regionals in Leeds, securing our spot in the finals in London! 🙌 What makes this victory even more special is that this is Sheffield Hallam Universities first-ever win in the IMechE Design Challenge regionals – a proud moment not just for our team, but for the university as well. 💪 A huge thank you to our supervisors, Dr. Jonathan Scholey and Dr. Stephen Agha, for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this project. Now onto the finals in London! 🚀

IMechE Design Challenge National Winners. It's got a nice ring to it, doesn't it? This achievement comes as a culmination of a year of multiple iterations, long nights, and many many laughs along the way. I will always be grateful to the team: Victor Brinzan, Hovan Cheung, Leonardo Piglia, Rustam Toshov & Syed Kabir Ali Shah. There are few others I know capable of consistently pushing the limits of excellence to achieve our common goal. As this competition draws to a close, I can confidently say that this invaluable experience has drastically improved my understanding of what it means to be an engineer. I look forward to reaching greater heights alongside these giants I am fortunate enough to call my friends! Thank you to Dr Tom Peach for your support throughout the competition. Mudit Pahwa, your creative input is appreciated, as always.

3rd Year Mechanical Engineering (Meng) Student At The University Of Leeds.

Hi everyone! It's been a busy few months, but many exciting things have happened over this time! Starting with the most recent, after winning the Yorkshire region finals of the IMechE Design Challenge, we travelled to the IMechE headquarters in London to participate in the national finals representing the University of Leeds! This was an incredible occasion and having the opportunity to speak with industry professionals about our design was an excellent learning experience! Having led the mechanical design for our vehicle, we received a lot of really helpful feedback which will certainly help me to improve how I go about problem-solving both at university and in industry. Next, during the summer, I completed an 8-week summer internship at the University Of Leeds, based around Advanced Manufacturing and CNC Machining. Throughout my internship, I learnt how to operate both the hardware and software of CNC machinery, while also learning how to optimise CAD models for manufacturing on a CNC machine. Another aspect of my internship was to create a series of educational yet engaging videos, demonstrating the capabilities of CNC machinery for new 1st year students, while also creating easy-to-understand tutorials on several pieces of metrology equipment. I would like to thank my supervisors Kacper Dobras and Mingwen Bai for guiding me through this internship and teaching me some really useful aspects of advanced manufacturing. Finally, I created a poster showcasing all of the work I had done over the course of my internship, winning a runner-up prize for best poster sponsored by The Bragg Centre for Materials Research! I'm now well into my third year of university, and looking forward to all of the challenges it's going to bring!

Despite it being many months after the IMechE Design Challenge, I wanted to see it through both the regionals and the nationals... So on the 30/05/2024, representing Sheffield Hallam University, the team which consists of Me, Farhan Mohd Fuad, Luis Rodriguez, Harris Nuthalapati and Lizzie Pope. Our supervisors who provided guidance were Dr Jonathan Scholey and Dr Stephen Agha. We faced many adversities during the lead up to regionals such as time constraint as we were many months behind, (We only started around February), as well as trying to complete our assignments which was scrunched up in such a short deadline apart from each other. Another challenge we faced was the device itself, there was many obstacles that we had to overcome especially last minute with the DPDT switch in where the spring wouldn't depress against the wall so we just removed the spring and it worked. So I am proud to say that we won the regionals which was in Leeds, winning 4/5 categories, ensuring a spot for us to go to the finals in London. But what I am more proud of is representing our University and putting it on the map by winning this regionals. My colleagues and I were the first group of people representing Hallam to win our first ever entry in the regionals. Post about Nationals coming soon...
