About us
The Journal of Transport and Land Use (JTLU) is the leading international journal that publishes original interdisciplinary papers on the interaction of transport and land use. JTLU welcomes original submissions across the globe and from a wide range of domains, including engineering, planning, modeling, behavior, economics, geography, regional science, sociology, architecture and design, network science, and complex systems. JTLU is published and sponsored by the University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies. It is the official journal of the World Society for Transport and Land Use (WSTLUR).

📃 #HotOfPress Thrilled to share our paper just published in the Journal of Transport and Land Use : "Active travel in the university setting: Assessing the effects of social behavior, socioeconomics, and spatial location" co-authored with Catarina Dias Cadima 🚲 This paper further explores the likelihood of #active #mobility uptake at a university campus over the years of 2012, 2017, and 2023. Results indicate that travel distance influences housing choices and mobility costs, whereas access to a metro station was associated with #walking and #cycling. Our study provides insights to guide planning practitioners and decision-makers in creating integrated #transport #policy packages that address the barriers and needs of the university community and the surrounding neighborhoods. 📃To read the full publication: https://lnkd.in/e9cVsmhk

New in JTLU: “Analyzing gender and age differences in travel patterns and accessibility for demand response transit in small urban areas: A case study of Tennessee” by Jing Guo, Changsha University of Science and Technology; Sabyasachee Mishra, University of Memphis; and Candace Brakewood, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. https://lnkd.in/gDtwvdGc Demand Response Transit (DRT) services play a crucial part in supporting transportation systems in small urban and more rural areas. This study analyzed real-world DRT trip data from Tennessee, identifying trip purposes based on origin and destination land uses. Statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate DRT travel patterns for passengers of different demographic groups, particularly women and the elderly. #DemandResponse #TennesseeTransit #WomenInTransit

New in JTLU: “Assessing the spatial footprint of e-commerce logistics differentiating the types of warehouses: The case of Amazon in the United States” by Matthieu Schorung, Sorbonne University; Thibault LECOURT, Avignon University; and Laetitia Dablanc, Gustave Eiffel University. https://lnkd.in/gYdWfRBS This research focuses on the evolution of Amazon’s logistics system, and particularly the geography of Amazon’s warehouses, marked by an expansion of the spatial footprint of the warehouses and by a functional specialization of its logistics system. #Amazon #SupplyChain #Warehousing

New in JTLU: Employment concentration, dispersion, and the changing commute in the San Francisco Bay Area by Evelyn Blumenberg and Samuel Speroni, UCLA. https://lnkd.in/gDPrTTfc This paper finds that the commute distance in the San Francisco Bay Area increased slightly between 2002 and 2015. The number of jobs was by far the strongest predictor of commute distance, and this relationship strengthened over time. The relationship between employment concentration and commute distance was moderated by employment growth in downtown San Francisco, where, all else equal, workers traveled shorter distances. In addition, aggregate commute travel increased significantly from 2002 to 2015, explained largely by job growth and only secondarily by increased commute distance. #CommuteTrends #UrbanMobility #SanFrancisco

New in JTLU: “The distribution of shared parking use in time and space: A case study in Guangzhou, China” by Juan Wang and Pengyu Zhu, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. https://lnkd.in/g6iKkWUe Using 434,564 records from 121 shared parking lots in Guangzhou (from Nov 2020 to Oct 2021), this study reveals that the number of transactions is significantly affected by factors such as implemented duration, parking lot capacity, surrounding land use, nearby POIs, and transit stations. The average parking duration is influenced by land use, nearby office buildings, and parking lot peak time.

New in JTLU: “Exploring factors affecting route choice of cyclists: A novel varying-contiguity spatially lagged exogenous modeling approach” by Nick van Nijen and M. Baran Ulak, University of Twente; Sander Veenstra, Witteveen+Bos; and Karst Geurs, University of Twente. https://lnkd.in/g7AAWCXj A critical element in guiding improvements and expansions to the bicycling network is to understand the route choice of cyclists, which helps identify bottlenecks in bicycle flows and substantiate the need for new bicycle infrastructure. This study developed a model to analyze the likelihood of a cyclist choosing a certain route based not only on the characteristics of that segment but also considering characteristics along a route—such as bicycle facilities, traffic control, bicycle and motorized-vehicle volumes, and different land-use zones. #BicycleNetwork #UrbanPlanning #Bicycling The paper appears in the special issue: Modeling Choice Behavior of Cyclists & Pedestrians in Urban Areas.

New in JTLU: “Modeling home property listings’ time-on-market duration and listing outcome using copula-based competing risk method“ by Yicong (Nora) Liu, Saeed Shakib, Eric J. Miller, and Khandker Nurul Habib, all of the University of Toronto. https://lnkd.in/gzh6dmt5 This paper presents a joint model of home property listings’ time-on-market (TOM) duration and listing outcomes and discovers statistically significant and positive correlations between the TOM of terminated listings and the type of termination—whether a listing is withdrawn, converted to a lease, or re-listed for sale. This suggests that the unobserved factors that make a seller more likely to end a listing also tend to shorten its time on the market before termination. #LUTI #housingmarket
