New in JTLU: Employment concentration, dispersion, and the changing commute in the San Francisco Bay Area by Evelyn Blumenberg and Samuel Speroni, UCLA.  https://lnkd.in/gDPrTTfc This paper finds that the commute distance in the San Francisco Bay Area increased slightly between 2002 and 2015. The number of jobs was by far the strongest predictor of commute distance, and this relationship strengthened over time. The relationship between employment concentration and commute distance was moderated by employment growth in downtown San Francisco, where, all else equal, workers traveled shorter distances. In addition, aggregate commute travel increased significantly from 2002 to 2015, explained largely by job growth and only secondarily by increased commute distance. #CommuteTrends #UrbanMobility #SanFrancisco

New in JTLU: “The distribution of shared parking use in time and space: A case study in Guangzhou, China” by Juan Wang and Pengyu Zhu, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. https://lnkd.in/g6iKkWUe Using 434,564 records from 121 shared parking lots in Guangzhou (from Nov 2020 to Oct 2021), this study reveals that the number of transactions is significantly affected by factors such as  implemented duration, parking lot capacity, surrounding land use, nearby POIs, and transit stations. The average parking duration is influenced by land use, nearby office buildings, and parking lot peak time.

Baran Ulak, University of Twente; Sander Veenstra, Witteveen+Bos; and Karst Geurs, University of Twente. https://lnkd.in/g7AAWCXj A critical element in guiding improvements and expansions to the bicycling network is to understand the route choice of cyclists, which helps identify bottlenecks in bicycle flows and substantiate the need for new bicycle infrastructure. Miller, and Khandker Nurul Habib, all of the University of Toronto. https://lnkd.in/gzh6dmt5 This paper presents a joint model of home property listings’ time-on-market (TOM) duration and listing outcomes and discovers statistically significant and positive correlations between the TOM of terminated listings and the type of termination—whether a listing is withdrawn, converted to a lease, or re-listed for sale. This suggests that the unobserved factors that make a seller more likely to end a listing also tend to shorten its time on the market before termination.  #LUTI #housingmarket

New in JTLU: “Effect of multiscale metro network-wide attributes on peak-hour station passenger and flow balancing” by haixiao pan, Miao Hu, Xiyin Deng, and Ailing Liu of Tongji University. https://lnkd.in/e3byqhDc This paper considers the multiscale subnetwork (MSSN) as a new concept for passenger analysis in a large-scale metro network system. The research suggests that regional attributes of jobs-housing balance and transportation conditions in the MSSN range significantly influence both station passengers and flow imbalance.
