Just outside Portland, Oregon, Lake Oswego School District's recently opened River Grove Elementary School - built to withstand earthquakes and other climate change-related extreme weather events - is believed to be the first micro-grid school in the nation: a self-sufficient energy system, partially powered by an onsite solar array, that can operate independently from the area’s electric grid. At the K12 Facilities Forum, Anthony Vandenberg, the district's executive director for project management, will share the impetus behind building the innovative school, the interesting facets of its design, and how its resiliency can serve as an inspiration for similar projects nationwide. 🌵Join us in Tempe (Nov. 10-12)! Public schools in the US cover about 2 million acres of land, much of which has been cleared of trees, turning them into “shade deserts.” As the climate warms, some districts are removing the asphalt that surrounds many of their buildings – which absorbs and holds heat – and replacing it with shade components, trees, and rain gardens as a way to cool students, staff, and structures. https://lnkd.in/ggYFtWMk
