Richard Clinnick to be Modern Railways Editor The new Editor of Modern Railways will be Richard Clinnick, who will join Key Publishing Limited in November. Richard is an experienced railway journalist. Currently Editor of Rail Express, he has also worked at International Railway Journal, Rail Business Daily, and for many years was a member of the editorial team at Rail magazine. Richard will lead the Modern Railways portfolio, which as well as the monthly magazine (available in print and digital formats) includes digital database product Modern Railways Insight and a comprehensive events programme under the Fourth Friday Club brand, featuring three high profile awards events (the Golden Spanners, Golden Whistles and Railway Innovation Awards) and a programme of regional conferences. Current Editor Philip Sherratt will leave in October to move to a new role as CEO of the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators, and the November issue of the magazine (published in late October) will be his last as Editor. During the interim period before Richard joins, Consultant Editor James Abbott and Deputy Editor Andy Roden will be responsible for editorship of the magazine. Commenting on his appointment, Richard said: ‘I’m delighted to be joining the railway's market leading magazine, and look forward to carrying on the good work Phil and his outstanding team have undertaken.’ Dave Lane, Publisher of Modern Railways, said: ‘I’d like to thank Phil for all his hard work helping to develop Modern Railways, our conferences, awards and digital database. As publisher of the Modern Railways brand, I cannot praise him highly enough for his hard work, integrity and knowledge. Phil has maintained the high standard set by James Abbott and I have no doubt that Richard will continue to grow Modern Railways. ‘Richard has a good level of experience and industry knowledge editing in the UK rail market, having worked on Rail, IRJ and Rail Business Daily, not forgetting Rail Express, where at present he is the Editor.’

Modern Railways reposted this
September's issue of Modern Railways officially goes on sale today! 🚆 Featuring an article by one of our Principal Consultants, Martin Ward, detailing the challenges of managing overtime within train operators. Martin writes from the perspective of 20+ years in the passenger and freight operators including working as Head of Workforce Strategy and co-author of the Rail Delivery Group's traincrew resourcing guidance The article describes the types of overtime working, the risks and benefits of overtime to companies and their staff, the conflicting objectives faced, and how increasing staff numbers to reduce overtime can be resource intensive, take time to deliver benefits, and may not reduce overtime without other changes to terms and conditions.
