Great new article on AI from Dr Leandro Herrero in this week's Strategic Magazine...
Pragmatic and strategic communication consultant, advisor, writer and editor. Founder, #WeLeadComms; Editor-in-Chief, Strategic, (he/him).
In his first monthly column for Strategic Magazine, Dr Leandro Herrero, connects brain science with a look at artificial intelligence to add some deeply-needed context to the #AI conversation. "These differences are not just neuroscience territory, but are at the core of the profound, historical cultural shift in society, with practical consequences for how we think, educate, lead, and now, crucially, how we build and interact with artificial intelligence. " "Our society puts a premium on analytical skills (when did you see a job advert asking for synthesis skills?) and this is self-reinforcing. AI and Large Language Models feel very much at home here. Artificial intelligence is so good that it could even provide artificial stupidity." Read further: https://lnkd.in/euwRfEmv

THE DEATH OF THE DAILY RATE (SLIGHTLY EXAGERATED) AND A PARISIENNE STORY Big Consulting has always used the body count model: for this project, we need 1 partner, 2 seniors and 10 juniors. The partner daily rate is X, seniors @Y, and juniors @Z. Do the maths. That’s it. The service provided is translated into number of hours or days. Ditto lawyers and even psychotherapists. For us, in business consultancy, this has been a constant battle territory. By and large we have avoided the daily rate pill. It. It’s flawed. It’s toxic. You should never, never, never sell your time. Many clients (mostly in Procurement) roll their eyes. Sometimes the client whispers: could you please, please just provide some numbers for the spreadsheet to make Procurement happy? We have done it many times. I confess. I have also been told very often, don’t fight that, it’s the norm. No point. But it isn’t (in normal life). A surgeon doesn’t bill you for the number of hours in the operating theatre, plus some for preparation at lower rate. An artist that you may have commissioned does not charge you by the number of pencils and hours it took them to draw. Even in a bigger project, such as an advertising campaign, that would probably be conceived as a fixed cost, plus possible extras, regardless of the number of hours for one Creative Director, two principals, 3 graphic designers and a weekly meeting. I am not saying the ‘units’ don’t count at all, but the so called ‘delivery’ (I hate this term) is not the sum of flipcharts, computer screens used and branding logos prototypes. There is a fee. If you need to lower the cost, what are you going to do? Cut down the number of screens? See the client in the basement instead of on the 10th floor? AI disrupts the consultants’ earnings ‘per body, per hours, per daily rate’ since a great deal of research time, and presentation time, and report delivery time have been shrunk to a minimum. Minutes? Try to justify bodies now. Good luck. I will unashamedly celebrate any death of the hourly rate (but won’t tell my plumber yet). It’s a trap. Never sell your time. If you value what you do (do, think, say, advise…), resist. In a story I heard many years ago, a Parisienne lady wants to have a hat made for her, using ribbons of many colours. The hat maker (milliner) agrees and asks her to come back in a week. She does. ”Madame, here it is. It’s 500 Euros.” “500 Euros!” the buyer screams. “But they are just ribbons!” ”Madame”, the quiet craftsman says, “the ribbons are free.” Paraphrasing Mark Twain, the death of the Daily Rates may have been greatly exaggerated, but AI is not taking prisoners. It’s a funeral I’d be glad to attend. Dr Leandro Herrero uk-office@tghechalfontproject.com www.thechalfontproject.com

With AI so prominent in the news over recent weeks, now is the perfect time to consider the potential impacts on your organization: • AI is neither our saviour nor our downfall. The challenge is reshaping organizations in its presence. What role can it play? • A call to humanize work. Can AI be the force that finally breaks outdated hierarchies and rigid structures? • Nietzsche warned us: "You are your enemy". AI isn’t the threat—old ways of thinking are. There is too much distraction in the AI narratives. Where are the trees? • What does it all mean for organizational life? For organizational culture? Great to be involved in this event last week where Dr Leandro Herrero spoke about "Why Change Fails?"
Today is one of these days when I feel so proud of what I do, and to be working for Manchester City Council. It's been an incredible privilege to event manage our annual Leadership Summit, bringing together c.500 most senior colleagues, our Leadership Pathway programmes participants and key partners. It truly was an incredible day of speeches from Paul Marshall , Tom Stannard and Cllr Bev Craig; insightful breakout sessions led by internal and external guests and plenty of time for colleagues to network and reconnect in person. There's been many highlights: 1. Inspiring Leadership panel discussion beautifully co-hosted by Bernadette Enright & Dr Cordelle Ofori FFPH with contributions from Emma Harrison, Thomas Stevens - one of our apprentices, Hailey- incredible manager in Youth Justice and Davina Consoli. The panels' honest account of how leaders have influenced their experience was insightful, touching and at points gave us all giggles! Thanks to all of you for saying yes to being on the panel! 2. Jaz Ampaw-Farr - our keynote speaker. Just wow, what an inspiration! Thanks for making me re-think what success actually looks like to me and for being the kind soul, and such an easy person to collaborate with. 3. Jaya Vyas & Kai Daley being incredible hosts today! Watching you own the stage, and seeing your confidence shoot from last week's rehearsals to today has been so heart warming. We are in safe hands with future leaders like you! Huge thanks to Professor Andy Miah 🎓 for the brillaint talk on AI in the workplace, Paul Holme & team for their Good data, good decisions, good outcomes sessions, colleagues in finance for giving an insight into Managing money & making difficult decisions, The Chalfont Project - Organization Architects for the thought provoking Why change fails session and the very many colleagues who contributed to the Residents as active citizens workshop (Lisa Turner and co)! And last but not least, the very mighty team behind all the planning and excellent execution today. Susie Adams, Eleanor Battle, Michelle Doran, Emma Norton, Natalie Holme, Clare Eldershaw Assoc CIPD, Samantha Latty, Jamie McGrath, Suzanne Grimshaw, Kirsty Geering, Emily Kay, Peter McCue, Martin, Sophie, Mat, Matt, Bea, Julie, Ruth, Alun and Helen ☺️
