In the second installment of her AI for Legal Aid series for Thomson Reuters Institute, our CEO Kristen Sonday covers how legal services organizations are leveraging AI to help individuals in need. In one example, Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands used a combination of document automation and AI tools to automatically generate expungement petitions. At a one-day legal clinic, LAS expunged 324 charges for 98 people — work that would have taken significantly longer without automation. In another, Legal Aid of North Carolina is leveraging AI to provide 24/7 access to legal information through a virtual assistant known as the AI Legal Information Assistant (LIA). Available on the organization’s website, LIA answers questions from the public about housing, family law, and consumer rights in plain language, making legal information accessible to those who may not have immediate access to an attorney.
