The good news is that we already have isolated and characterized human mAbs for Mpox virus (see our Cell paper at https://lnkd.in/guQGjjg4), which has escalated again. This time the outbreak is caused by a clade I virus, and unfortunately the strain is resistant to the one small molecule drug that was useful. Mpox was declared a public health emergency in Africa this week. The logic of our AHEAD100 program (making mAbs for all emerging viruses before outbreaks occur) seems ever more obvious. The bad news is that even though we have been working on pox antibodies since 1998, in typical panic/neglect fashion, the research funding climate for this work has been sparse and sporadic. Nevertheless we have good antibodies in hand (from survivors of a previous mpox outbreak in the US!), in vivo efficacy data in small animals and NHPs, and partners in industry, government and academia to get this done. Still, its a bit of a scramble to get these into clinical trials because of the complexity. #AHEAD100 #mpox #antibodies
