The McKinsey Health Institute recently joined the World Knowledge Forum in South Korea as it celebrated its 25th anniversary. Lucy Perez, Senior Partner MHI Coleader, Michelle Williams of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Richard Lee, Senior Partner with McKinsey & Company, delved deep into the women’s health gap - a $1 trillion opportunity to improve lives and economies - which significantly impacts women during their prime working years. In his video address, Bob Sternfels, Global Managing Partner at McKinsey & Company spoke to the theme of the convening, ‘A Journey Towards Coexistence’, highlighting the criticality of sustainable and inclusive growth, and the need to close the women’s health gap. In South Korea alone, addressing this gap could potentially boost the country's GDP by over $15 billion annually by 2040. Focusing on women’s mental health is particularly crucial, as women in South Korea currently report below-average mental health. About us
This is a decisive moment in the history of human health. Over the last century, society has made incredible progress in extending life. But while life expectancy has increased, so has the amount of time spent in moderate to poor health. And significant inequities persist both across and within countries. It’s time to set a more ambitious aspiration. An aspiration for everyone on the planet to add years to their lives and life to their years. Humanity mobilized against COVID-19 at a speed and scale previously unseen. While far from perfect, our successes should inspire us to challenge what we think is possible. At its best, our response to COVID-19 demonstrates that when resources and motivation coalesce, scientific breakthroughs, and large-scale behavior change are possible in very short periods of time. The McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) is an enduring, non-profit-generating entity within the firm. It was founded on the conviction that, over the next decade, humanity could add as much as 45 billion extra years of higher-quality life (roughly six years per person on average—and substantially more in some countries and populations). MHI’s mission is to catalyze the actions needed across continents, sectors, and communities to realize this possibility.

Most people spend more than half of their waking hours at work, making the workplace a pivotal space for supporting holistic health and improving overall well-being. The McKinsey Health Institute, through the World Economic Forum's Healthy Workforces initiative, cohosted "Measuring What Matters: Data-Driven Approaches to Employee Health and Well-being" alongside the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Cross-sectoral industry leaders discussed the the role of employers in driving employee health and well-being, and emerging ways to measure and prove the effectiveness of employee health interventions. Some key takeaways: ➡️ Employees are a company's most valuable asset, especially as AI reshapes the workforce, and leadership commitment is needed to focus investment in workforce health ➡️ We need to design programs focused on holistic health that have clear objectives and measure health outcomes for mental health and physical well-being (going beyond simply measuring levels of engagement) ➡️ Each individual is different: companies need to understand their workforce and develop effective strategies to tailor interventions accordingly Learn more about our work to create healthier workplaces globally: https://lnkd.in/dZ8JC7Rt #EmployeeHealth #HealthyWorkforces #UNGA79

Why does investing in mental health inspire us? Because mental health is essential for well-being and a thriving society. Because we are on the cusp of a mental health science revolution to make services more impactful, affordable, and accessible. Because it is financially viable, attractive, and sustainable. This week African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA), Clinton Global Initiative, Kokoro , McKinsey Health Institute, and Wellcome Trust proudly announced the Coalition for Mental Health Investment. Everyone has a role to play, and we must work together to achieve our bold vision: Within a generation, investment in mental health will match the scale of global need. We're so grateful for our community of mission-aligned leaders and organizations who joined the Coalition's launch this week -- in person and virtually. Alongside the United Nations General Assembly, the Missing Billion Initiative, McKinsey Health Institute and Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. convened funders and implementers for an action-oriented dialogue on advancing health equity through disability-inclusive health investments. The importance of driving transformation externally and internally at the organization level, having people with disabilities play a key role in the design of funding mechanisms, and viewing disability through the lens of intersectionality across sectors - from healthcare to education and more, were some of the insights shared by panelists Samantha Diamond of Clinton Health Access Initiative, Catherine Hyde Townsend of Ford Foundation, Charlotte McClain-Nhlapo Nhlapo of The World Bank Group and Chris Carter of the Human Development Department, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office UK, in an energizing conversation moderated by Dr Ola Abualghaib. 90-90-90 by 2033. 90% of all individuals screened for mental and substance use disorders. 90% of those in need able to receive evidence-based treatment. 90% of those receiving treatment able to manage their symptoms in recovery. In 2023, the McKinsey Health Institute made an official commitment in support of The Kennedy Forum’s Alignment for Progress movement, joining to help develop a 90-90-90 vision roadmap and to catalyze cross-system action toward mental health for all. Since then, we've been working together alongside leaders and organizations to highlight key themes and develop our Systems Mapping Tool, which identifies the range of stakeholders who must be involved in driving this change. Today, MHI's Director of Brain Health Kana Enomoto joined TKF's CEO Rebecca O. Bagley on stage at the 2024 Alignment for Progress Conference to jointly share an update on the roadmap and how to operationalize it over the next 10 years. Achieving the vision will require stakeholders to develop a strong foundation for sustainable mental health, invest in systems to effectively deliver robust services, and innovate and scale resources to ensure equitable access. Brain health is a shared responsibility for all. By addressing the global burden of brain health conditions, society could regain 130 million years of higher-quality life, with each year adding $200,000 of economic value — a $26 trillion opportunity. This week, McKinsey Health Institute joined #UNGA Brain Days to explore the societal and economic opportunities of investing in brain health. MHI Director of Brain Health Kana Enomoto delivered a keynote speech at the Brain Economy Summit, building on a recent article that highlights brain health as a meaningful economic driver. She discussed the essential levers to harness positive brain capital and emphasized that everyone — from caregivers to educators to employers — has a role to play in promoting brain health. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/erPpusKT Brain Days also marks the launch of a collaboration between MHI, UsAgainstAlzheimer's, and Davos Alzheimer's Collaborative exploring the role employers can play in promoting positive brain health within their workforces. MHI introduced a unified framework for brain health in the workplace, offering a new perspective on the intersection of mental health, neurological health, and work performance.
