#Sarcoidosis is a debilitating and sometimes fatal inflammatory condition. Classified as a rare disease, sarcoidosis has no cure. Some may experience symptoms that last one to two years, but for others, it can be a lifelong battle. To address gaps in current research, the Ann Theodore Foundation, in partnership with the Milken Institute Science Philanthropy Accelerator for Research and Collaboration (SPARC), recently awarded more than $2.4 million to five interdisciplinary research teams. The goal is to improve understanding of this rare disease and bring the field closer to novel and effective therapies. In just four years since the partnership began in 2021, more than 15 teams from over a dozen institutions have begun projects to improve the understanding of this disease, inching the scientific and medical community closer to the breakthroughs patients need. In times of disaster, whether humanitarian or natural, understanding how to respond quickly and provide widespread support to individuals, communities, and populations cannot be undervalued. Corporate foundations are most likely to respond to crises when their employees, consumers, or suppliers live in the communities affected but are often also urged—by employees, customers, and their boards—to help those who are suffering beyond the reach of the company itself. For a multinational company’s philanthropy team, with officers and stakeholders around the world, it can be a constant challenge to decide when to respond, what form the response should take, and how to deploy funds effectively. The LEGO Foundation recognized the need to create a more agile framework for these situations. In 2024, they launched a new acute response grantmaking model, which allows partners and foundation leaders to make critical decisions in a timely, organized, and strategic manner and get funding to children in need as part of the foundation’s mission to “build a future where learning through play empowers children to become creative, engaged, life-long learners.” Download the report and read how the Lego Foundation’s new model has increased the resilience and safety of children experiencing humanitarian crises globally: https://lnkd.in/du2zH7BW. At 26, Diana Orembe was one of the co-founders of biotech startup, NovFeed, and was awarded the grand prize for the Milken-Motsepe Prize in AgriTech in 2022. Diana, alongside other colleagues, developed the technology to transform the farming industry in Tanzania. The technology upcycles organic waste into nutritious, sustainable, traceable, and cheaper high-protein feed alternative to traditional feeds, which provides greater financial and environmental resiliency to farmers. For #InternationalYouthDay, MI Philanthropy wanted to highlight one of the finalists for the Milken-Motsepe Prize in AgriTech. In 2022, the Milken Institute hosted the Milken-Motsepe Prize in AgriTech, a global competition for innovative solutions to increase economic value to farmers, from seed to sale. Two young entrepreneurs, Sandra Namboozo and Samuel Muyita, founded Karpolax, which focuses on reducing food waste and boosting the low shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Karpolax produces tailor-made sachets using nanotechnology to help increase the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. By offering them to farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, they can sell their produce at the best market price and realize a higher economic value of their produce.
