⚡ Protecting kids and schools from cyber threats ⚡ Microsoft’s latest Cyber Signals report looks at a topic that I’ve been working on for years: protecting education systems from cyber threats. Often the magnitude of the impact is misunderstood. Microsoft continually evaluates threat data from around the world, and the education sector is the third most targeted industry. Microsoft Defender for Office data shows that more than 15,000 messages with malicious QR codes are targeted at the education sector every day. Why target schools? Schools, universities and districts offer some unique opportunity for adversaries. At the K-12 level, the user base includes people as young as six years old. The environment is constantly changing, with new people coming and going, and public activities that bring entire communities into the campus. School systems continually send out announcements, reminders and fliers in email that create a lot of traffic for attackers to blend into. Education is also an industry of industries. In higher education, nation states target experts with deep connections in government and the private sector, looking to steal valuable IP or policy insights that can tilt negotiations or change the race for the next big breakthrough. Schools also often host highly charged events like election polling or political rallies that may attract bad actors. It's a huge, complicated puzzle, and all of this makes cybersecurity in education a fascinating topic that is a personal mission of mine. I’d encourage everyone to check out the new Cyber Signals report for a deeper dive into who is targeting schools and why — and steps we can all take to make that harder to do, including the next generation of student defenders joining the front lines courtesy of AI-Powered Student Security Operation Centers (SOCs)!
