Empowering a new generation of Muslim philanthropic and nonprofit leaders.
About us
The Muslim Philanthropy Initiative (MPI) is one of the five units at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (LFSOP). The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy is the only school in the world devoted to the study of philanthropy. It is a leading academic institution dedicated to increasing the understanding of philanthropy and improving its practice worldwide through research, teaching, training and civic engagement. The school offers academic degrees, professional training certifications, and cutting-edge, rigorous research on philanthropy. MPI's mission is to equip communities, organizations, and leaders with objective information and thought leadership about Muslim philanthropy through research, trainings, education and convening. Insufficient data-driven research on Muslim giving, coupled with a lack of knowledge and understanding of U.S. Muslim demographics and other related dynamics, underscores the importance of MPI’s mission. The Muslim American nonprofit sector has also been traditionally under-funded and under-resourced and beset with increasing levels of Islamophobia and prejudice. MPI’s programming is aimed at addressing these issues thus enabling Muslim philanthropy to thrive and direct much needed resources towards tackling broader humanitarian issues. Imams and Islamic scholars from all over North America come together at the annual North American Imams Fellow (NAIF) conference. Thank you to MPI’s Asst. Director, Abdul Samad, for representing us at the 2024 conference. This year’s theme was focused on discovering new ways for Imams to make a real difference in their communities. Such conferences give MPI the opportunity to connect with Imams, zakat administrators, and community leaders, share insights, and build upon its research.

"At present, it is difficult to determine the full picture of giving to religion for American Muslims because many organizations to which Muslims donate fall outside the parameters of religious giving for the purposes of Giving USA Foundation." In this paper in Wiley's Religion Compass Journal, Micah Hughes and Dr. Shariq Siddiqui review key themes and questions in the study of Islamic charity and question its impact on the study of Muslim philanthropy. They also survey recent literature on charitable endowments/waqf, obligatory giving/zakat, and voluntary charity/sadaqa. https://lnkd.in/gwBFg7tx Irfan Syauqi Beik
