Stream Season 1 Episode 4 of The Neuromodulation Podcast now! ➕ The Intersection of Neurorehabilitation and Neuromodulation ➕ 🎙 Dr. Alexios Carayannopoulos discusses the field of neurorehabilitation and its intersection with neuromodulation, addressing topics including his approach to multidisciplinary care and the importance of effective communication between specialists, accessibility of care, the impact of cultural barriers on patient outcomes, the process of device implant trials, and the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the future of the field. 👨⚕️ Alexios Carayannopoulos, DO, MPH, DABPMR, FAAOE, FFSMB is chief of the departments of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Rhode Island Hospital and Newport Hospital, as well as medical director of outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation at Rhode Island, The Miriam Hospital, and Newport Hospitals. He is chief of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation of Lifespan Physician Group, and an attending physician at the Norman Prince Spine Institute. Dr. Carayannopoulos is a full professor of neurosurgery and neurology, clinician educator, at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Carayannopoulos is board-certified in both physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as in pain medicine. He completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School and his fellowship in pain medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. He earned a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University and certification in medical acupuncture from Harvard University. He spent 13 years as a US Navy diver and submarine officer and is a specialist in undersea medicine and radiation health. Dr. Carayannopoulos is internationally known as a leader in rehabilitation, interventional spine treatment, and pain medicine. He is president of the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners and president of the Rhode Island Society of Pain Physicians. He is chair of multiple committees within the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, North American Neuromodulation Society, and the International Neuromodulation Society. He is a board member of the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience.  Dr. Carayannopoulos has been awarded Top Doctor in physical medicine and rehabilitation each year from 2017 through 2024 by Castle Connolly. He sits on the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline and the Rhode Island Board of Occupational Therapy. He is extensively published in the medical literature, frequently speaks at national and international medical meetings, and has been interviewed by the news media on numerous occasions.

Statistics is important in every facet of medicine, from evaluating the safety of new therapies to comparing treatment options in clinical trials. We explore the role of statistics in evidence-based medicine and precision medicine and offer guidance for clinicians to improve their understanding of statistical data to help make informed decisions and develop prediction models for personalized patient care. 👩⚕️ Dr. Lisa Goudman is assistant professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and FWO post-doctoral researcher. She holds master degrees in physiotherapy (Ugent 2014), statistical data analysis (Ugent 2018),statistics with specialisations in epidemiology and public health methodology (UHasselt 2020) and biostatistics (KU Leuven 2022). In 2019 she obtained her PhD at VUB, under the main supervision of prof. Maarten Moens, prof. Jo Nijs. She is primarily focusing on evaluating chronic pain patients and neuromodulation in her research with a specific interest in a holistic response. She is part of STIMULUS research group, a research and educational consortium in the field of neuromodulation at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Additionally, she is also member of Center for Neurosciences (C4N VUB) and Pain in Motion international research group.

Season 1 Episode 2 is live now! ➕ Why Pursue a Career in Neuromodulation – A Neurosurgeon Perspective ➕ 🎙 Dr. Heather Pinckard-Dover, a neurosurgeon specializing in neuromodulation, shares her personal journey and passion for the field, offering insight for clinicians considering neuromodulation for their career path. She discusses the immediate impact and rewards of neuromodulation in improving patients' lives while also highlighting challenges such as U.S. insurance coverage and the importance of patient selection. 👩⚕️ Dr. Pinckard-Dover is the director of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery at Marshall Health, specializing in surgeries to improve neurologic function. She treats a range of disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, other movement disorders, complex regional pain syndrome, postsurgical back and leg pain, chronic pain syndromes, spasticity, diabetic neuropathy, occipital neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, chronic pelvic pain, epilepsy, brain tumors and spine disease. Surgical treatments include deep brain stimulation (DBS), spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, occipital nerve stimulation, facial stimulation, vagal nerve stimulation, intrathecal baclofen pumps, craniotomy, discectomies and spine fusions. She strives to provide personal, compassionate care to each patient.
