According to the Agricultural Marketing Research Center, the average American only consume 1.5lbs of spinach a year. This is low when compared to other vegetables, such as potatoes, as American consume 124lbs of potatoes each year. It begs the question, why? Well, spinach has a been seen as a digusting vegetable to most Americans from a young age due to its bitter taste. The bitterness of this leafy green comes from its high levels of oxalic acid. Despite its somewhat unfavorable taste, spinach is extremely good for people of all ages to eat as it is full of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, C E, and K, as well as calcium, magnesium, iron. The high nutrition content of spinach makes it super food, and we at NutriNatal wanted to share some tips, as well as a recipe to encourage you all to eat your greens. To cut the bitterness of spinach, you can add salty seasonings or even sweeteners. Dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese can also reduce the bitterness of spinach, which is why we have included this spinach casserole recipe for you to follow! Be sure to give it a try and tag NutriNatal in your post! - https://lnkd.in/dJGuBQHZ #nutrition #prenatalcare

According to the American Academy of Physicians, ectopic pregnancies make up 1-2% of all pregnancies each year. While rare, ectopic pregnancies are extremely dangerous, specifically because this form of pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg begins to develop outside of the uterus. These “rogue” fertilized eggs utilize make unfortunate homes in an individual’s fallopian tubes. The dangers of an ectopic pregnancy come from the fact that as a fetus develops, it pushes on the organs outside of the uterus. This ultimately causes affected organs to rupture, resulting in severe hemorrhaging. While there is no way to ultimately prevent ectopic pregnancies, understanding their causes can help one risk the likelihood of experiencing one. According to Mayo Clinic, the likelihood of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy can be increased if one suffers from: - A history of previous ectopic pregnancies. - Inflammation. - Tubal surgery, (a surgery performed to correct a closed or damaged fallopian tube can increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy.) - The use of IUDs. - Smoking cigarettes. According to a 2015 NCBI survey, miscarriages occur in 15–20% of all pregnancies in the United States. A miscarriage is defined as the expulsion of a fetus from the womb before it is able to survive independently, especially spontaneously or as the result of an accident or injury. The causes behind miscarriages are complex, for example, a pregnant individual’s age can be a contributing factor, as can overall health (including weight, hormone levels, chronic illnesses, and more). While it is common knowledge that pregnant individuals should avoid alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco, did you know that ingesting certain foods can increase the chance of miscarriage as well? Although unlikely, there is a small chance that ingesting unpasteurised or soft ripened dairy products may cause listeriosis, a disease caused by Listeria bacteria. Raw and/or undercooked meats, including fish, can cause a range of diseases from toxoplasmosis to meningitis. This post is simply a reminder to cook all meat thoroughly before ingesting it, and to follow a balanced diet that provides proper nutrition for the health of yourself, your loved ones, and any developing children. #prenatalcare #education

According to a study done by the National Library Medicine, roughly 1-2 pregnant women out of every 1000 suffer from Intraheptic Cholestasis of pregancy, also known as ICP. This disease is a liver disorder characterized by intense itching of the hands and feet, as well as increased serum bile acids. ICP can be very uncomfortable for pregnant women, even triggering jaundice. ICP can also increase the likelihood of a premature birth and/or breathing difficulties in affected newborns. While a healthy diet does not necessarily assist in the treatment of ICP, it is still encouraged that pregnant women eat nutritious food to help stave off other potential ailments. Those affected by ICP can see medical professionals for treatment, which includes the administration of a medication called ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA, ursodiol or Actigall®), however, if the health of an unborn child is threatened doctors may induce an early delivery. It’s no secret that here in the U.S., eating beef is just as American as the national anthem. In fact, according to Statista, people in the U.S. consume roughly 30 billion pounds of beef each year. The cultivation of cattle for their meat has caused a lot of tension between cattle farmers and animal activists, and while this could be greatly reformed, the benefits of eating beef for pregnant women are undeniable. For example, beef is not only a great source of protein, but chocked full of iron, both of which are necessary for proper fetal development and to treat conditions such as maternal anemia. Beef is as tasty as it is versatile, and can be cooked in a number of ways. Therefore, we have included a recipe for shepherd’s pie below for your use. Feel free to take a photo of your pies and tag us to spread the word about our nutritional and educational content. - https://lnkd.in/eXQa_X5p #prenatalcare #education #nutrition

Did you know that according to the International Breastfeeding Journal, “Lactational mastitis is estimated to occur in up to 20% of breastfeeding women”. This condition, also known as puerperal mastitis, is a breast infection or inflammation that commonly affects breastfeeding women. It occurs when milk ducts become engorged for too long, allowing bacteria to enter through cracked or sore nipples and multiply in the milk. Despite the severity of this condition, there is hope! Lactational mastitis can be treated with dietary changes, specifically by eating anti-inflammatory foods, probiotic-rich foods, prebiotic-rich foods, and natural antibiotics. These include, but are not limited to: - Yogurt - Nuts - Avocado - Green vegetables The best part about these options is that they have a multitude of nutritional benefits, meaning eating healthier foods overall can treat inflammation and provide probiotics. According to the CDC, "in 2017–2018, 13.1% of women aged 50–64 and 27.1% of women aged 65 and older in the United States had osteoporosis. For men aged 50–64, 3.3% had osteoporosis." Osteoporosis is is a disease that causes bones to become weak and more likely to break due to a decrease in bone mineral density and thickness. It's also known as thin bones, low bone density, or metabolic bone disease. As shown by the data above, osteoporosis generally effects the elderly, however, this condition can affect younger people, specifically pregnant women. While the exact cause is unclear, it is believed that the amount of energy and nutrition required to fetal development can be so taxing that it causes the bone density of a pregnant mother to decrease. When the bone density falls to a certain level, this is called “pregnancy and lactiontion-associated osteoporosis”. This condition, also known as PLO, is rare, according to the NIH, affecting 1 in 50,000-100,000 women. Most cases of PLO are not only rare, but extremely severe, as a pregnant or postpartum woman’s bone density can become so fragile that bones fracture and/or break. According to Adi Cohen, a endocrinologist from Columbia, some of the first symptoms to highlight this disease includes severe back pain, which usually comes from fractures in the vertebrae. While eating calcium rich foods is naturally beneficial, women with PLO usually require medical intervention and supplementation to recover if the body does not improve on its own. For more information around PLO, as well as calcium rich foods, you can check out the following sources. - https://lnkd.in/e6Nx8uAP - https://lnkd.in/dZS3YW5 #prenatalcare #healthcare #osteoporosis

Hello everyone! While it’s no secret that salmon is a healthy food for any one to eat, we wanted to share some light on just how beneficial salmon is for pregnant women and the development of their babies. Salmon is full of protein, but also omega-3 fatty acids. For those what may be unaware, omega-3 acids are key building blocks that ensure normal bodily functions. They do this by providing our bodies with fuel and serving as a part of cell membranes, essentially giving our bodies structure. A lack of omega-3’s can cause a range of ailments, such as dry and irritated skin, inflammation, hair thinning and loss, depression, dry eyes, and joint pain or stiffness. For developing children, these effects can be magnified and severely impair cognitive function. Many healthcare providers encourage pregnant women to ensure all fish is properly cooked before being ingested to reduce the likelihood of fatal infections. To help promote proper nutrition, we have included a recipe for salmon balls to ensure that you and your developing family are nourished. - https://lnkd.in/eRc46n4p #nutrition #prenatalcare.

It’s no secret that pregnancy takes a heavy toll on the body. The creation of a new life requires a lot of resources, specifically energy and nutrition from a mother’s body. To prepare for this, the body begins to create a larger amount of hormones and demands more food to nourish itself and the developing child, however, this is sometimes insufficient. To be more specific, pregnancy can cause a condition known as maternal anemia. Essentially, a developing fetus can deplete its mother of iron, causing her to become anemic. Most cases of maternal anemia are mild, however, severe instances can increase the likelihood of a premature birth, as well as postpartum infections. Luckily, increasing one’s iron levels is not hard and can be done with the help of supplements if nutrition is not enough. Foods such as meat, lentils, spinach, and nuts are just a few examples of iron rich foods. For more information on how to treat maternal anemia, be sure to check out the following link: Sources: - https://lnkd.in/e9h6ZfEN #education #pregnancy #healthcare

As awareness around mental illness grows, many mothers, concerned loved ones, and medical professionals have made a point to emphasize education around postpartum depression. However, did you know that up to 7% of mothers suffer from depression while pregnant? According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), this form of depression, known as antenatal depression, is caused by the various factors, from changes in brain chemistry, hormones, and environmental stresses. Other than the cause, antenatal depression is not necessarily different from “standard” depression, however, the severity of this ailment can vary from individual to individual. Alongside exercise and positive mental health practices, antenatal depression can be treated with a healthy diet. In fact, a study done by the National Institute of Health (NIH) found that “Adherence to a Mediterranean diet may have the potential to lower depressive symptoms among pregnant women; however, these results should be interpreted with caution. Nevertheless, considering the public health significance of promoting mental wellness among pregnant women, this relationship merits further examination using experimental designs”.
