Today, we expanded our partnership with CDP, the foundational global data provider for the #NZDPU. The partnership ensures that, for the first time ever, a core set of climate data – which includes more than 10,000 companies representing over 50% of global market cap – will be publicly available for free. This partnership, necessary for meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement, marks a significant step in making climate information more widely available for public benefit. CDP and the Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) will also work together to streamline reporting, avoid duplication, and increase access to consistent, comparable corporate climate data globally. Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU)
Climate Data and Analytics
A unified, global, open climate transition-related data repository. Proof of concept launched at COP28.
About us
A lack of accessible, high-quality and comparable climate data remains one of the most significant barriers to achieving a global net-zero economy. Launched by French President Emmanuel Macron and United Nations (UN) Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions Michael R. Bloomberg in June 2022, the Climate Data Steering Committee (CDSC) recommended the creation of the Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU), a unified, global, open climate transition-related data repository. The mission of the NZDPU is to provide a central source of company-level climate transition-related data that is transparent and openly accessible to all. The release of the NZDPU proof of concept took place at COP28 in December 2023 and was a major milestone towards achieving this vision. Supported by CDP, the proof of concept provides an initial set of companies’ Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 GHG emissions and emissions reduction targets. Once development is completed, the NZDPU is intended to ultimately be integrated with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s Global Climate Action Portal.

During #NYCW, the Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU), XBRL International, Inc., and ClimateWorks Foundation co-hosted a roundtable that brought together standard setters, financial institutions, data service providers, and #NGOs to discuss the challenges and opportunities for increasing accessibility and discoverability of companies' reported climate data - bringing this data from the "dark" (i.e., #data that is not #digital, that is hard to consume, and hard to discover) into the “light.” Participants explored the development of digital taxonomies for tagging climate data and the ways of accelerating companies’ use of such taxonomies across jurisdictions, which can significantly enhance the accurate extraction and collection of data directly from company reporting. To ground the conversation, the #NZDPU presented out its climate data disclosure landscaping research – detailing the projected scaling of mandatory climate data disclosures globally, and how much of this data will be "dark" vs. "light." Watch this space for the full research post!

In case you missed it, last week we announced an expanded partnership with CDP, the foundational global data provider for the #NZDPU. Today, CDP announced the next step in our partnership with Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU), which will see CDP become the Utility’s foundational data provider. Core climate data from over 10,000 companies representing 50% of global market capitalization, who disclose through CDP, will become accessible for public good as the NZDPU moves from proof of concept to production. 👇Our CEO Sherry Madera, explains the importance of today’s announcement below. #WriteOnceUseMany

Just two days into #ClimateWeekNYC and I’m in awe of the momentum and progress. Collaboration is at the heart of driving the much-needed change in our sustainability ecosystem. I was proud today to announce the next stage in CDP’s partnership with the Net Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) and to share the stage with The President of the United States, Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg, Mary Schapiro, Jean-Paul Servais and David Schwimmer to introduce it to the world. CDP is helping increase the value of reporting for businesses by empowering them to write once, for many uses. In recent months, we’ve progressed this by aligning with IFRS S2, by introducing a single questionnaire for companies, and now, by using our unmatched dataset to power the NZDPU. This means CDP’s core climate data from more than 10,000 companies will be available for public purposes through the NZDPU. A new use case, but no additional reporting for companies. There is absolutely no point in reporting if it ends up in a silo. It makes it hard for users to compare performance between markets, forcing businesses to report to several places at once. I’m proud of CDP and our incredible teams leading the charge to solve this problem. We are building an environmental data market with a write once, use many ethos at its core. We can only do this by working with our valued partners. Just last week, we announced our partnership with Brazil’s Security and Exchange Commission, which will see CDP provide IFRS S2-aligned data to support Brazilian companies’ mandatory reporting. If this is just day two, I’m even more excited for day three and day four. Bloomberg Philanthropies / Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) / CDP
