About us
The Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP) is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Our mission is to provide strategic leadership and management, while encouraging collaboration, coordination, and innovation among federal agencies and stakeholders to reduce the burden of infectious diseases. OIDP works with federal and non-federal stakeholders to develop, coordinate, and implement national strategies and initiatives to prevent infectious diseases. Some of the topics addressed by our working groups and national strategies include: -Antibiotic resistance -Blood and tissue safety and availability -HIV and AIDS -Sexually transmitted infections -Tick-borne diseases -Vaccines and immunization -Viral hepatitis

#HIGHLIGHTS from the 2023 Progress Report for the Viral Hepatitis National Strategic Plan for the United States: A Roadmap to Elimination (2021–2025): ➡️In FY 2023, the U.S. continued to make progress and was on track to meet or exceed 2025 targets to reduce acute hepatitis B infections, increase the rate of hepatitis B “birth dose” vaccination, and reduce the rate of hepatitis C–related deaths. ➡️The U.S. is failing to meet 2025 targets and is moving in the opposite direction to reduce acute hepatitis C infections and reduce hepatitis B–related deaths in disproportionately impacted populations. On the last two days of the US Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA), https://brnw.ch/21wNzL8 continued its coverage with conversations about the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. (EHE) initiative, a syndemic, and the cautious and transparent use of generative AI. At the 2024 National Ryan White Conference on HIV Care and Treatment, Yemisi Odusanya, MPH, EHE Senior Advisor at HRSA’s HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB), spoke with https://brnw.ch/21wNzL8 about the social determinants of health and HAB’s latest results from the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. (EHE) initiative. On September 30th, CMS announced a National Coverage Determination regarding Medicare coverage of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for HIV prevention. Medicare Part B now covers PrEP medication and related services for those at increased HIV risk, including FDA-approved PrEP, counseling, and screenings, with no out-of-pocket costs if the provider accepts assignment and the pharmacy is enrolled in Medicare. NIAID’s HIV clinical research enterprise has achieved significant advances, including long-acting HIV prevention medications. Future goals focus on innovative research, addressing HIV and related diseases, and enhancing clinical trial efficiency to reduce HIV incidence and improve global health outcomes. Leading up to National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) on October 15, the Latino Commission on AIDS (LCOA) is hosting three informative webinars. The Vaccines National Strategic Plan sets forth a clear vision for how the United States will be a place where vaccine-preventable diseases are eliminated through safe and effective vaccination across the lifespan. The plan focuses on policies related to vaccines routinely recommended for the general population, and specific populations such as people with medical conditions. The White House Office of National AIDS Policy’s ¡Adelante! Summit held on September 24th, elevated the visibility of the HIV epidemic in Hispanic/Latino communities to inspire collective action nationwide. National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day took place on September 27. The CDC launched PrEPared/PrEParado, a campaign to boost PrEP use among Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino gay and bisexual men in the South, addressing HIV disparities and enhancing prevention efforts. The CDC reports an ongoing clade I mpox outbreak in Central and Eastern Africa, with over 21,000 cases in DRC in 2024. Transmission is primarily through sexual contact.
