David Kilshaw OBE, long-standing food industry entrepreneur and chair of Food Hub (NES) Ltd, the not-for-profit established to develop the ONE SeedPod industry innovation hub, has paid tribute to Sir Jim Walker – “the most iconic figure” in the Scottish food and drink industry. Speaking following the announcement of Sir Jim’s passing, David Kilshaw said: “I have known Jim for nearly 40 years and he was without doubt the most iconic figure in the Scottish food and drink industry. His passing has come as a huge shock, and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him personally and professionally. What he achieved in terms of the business with his family is phenomenal, building a global brand from its home on Speyside. Wherever you go in the world you will see Walker’s shortbread for sale. “He was also an extraordinary ambassador for the industry in north east Scotland and nationally. Jim was a true gentleman with an amazing ability to make people feel important. He personified all that is good about Scotland’s food and drink industry. His enthusiasm and encouragement have helped many in the industry over the decades. “I also speak for everyone involved in supporting the growth of the food and drink sector at Opportunity North East Limited when I say that Sir Jim served as an inspiration and model for entrepreneurship in the sector. “My thoughts and condolences are with his family. He will be sorely missed as a friend to so many of us,” said Mr Kilshaw.
SIR JAMES N WALKER CBE 1944 - 2024 It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Sir James Nicol Walker CBE on Sunday, 15th December 2024. James, known as ‘Jim,’ was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated over 60 years to building Walker’s into a globally recognised brand. Born in Elgin in 1944, Jim joined the family bakery in Aberlour, becoming its first salesperson and driving the business from a local bakery to a worldwide name with a turnover of £184m in 2023. As Joint Managing Director alongside his late brother Joe, his leadership and dedication to Speyside and its community were instrumental in Walker’s success. Jim was awarded a CBE in 1999 and a Knighthood in 2022 for exceptional services to the food industry. Beyond his professional achievements, he will be remembered for his warmth, humility, and devotion to his family, colleagues, and community. He will always be remembered as a devoted, energetic and kind man who was an inspiration to many who knew him. We will honour his memory by continuing to uphold the values and legacy he built over a lifetime of dedication.
