Being a claims examiner is hard. I mean, really effin hard. I've never been a claims examiner, but I did learn A LOT from the 2024 Supplemental Health, DI & LTC conference by LIMRA with a panel of some of the industry's best claims professionals: Sarah Thacker, Stephanie Turgeon, and the Amandas: Amanda DeSousa and Amanda Staples. The panel shared a poignant story about "Beth," who, despite being well-covered with a range of core and voluntary policies, faced a harrowing medical ordeal with severe complications arising from pregnancy. What struck me was how her already devastating situation was compounded by a fragmented claims process. Each of her policies was managed by different carriers, each with its own set of requirements and procedures. The administrative burden only added to her distress during this devastating ordeal, and hearing this story brought many, including the panelists, to tears. One key takeaway was the highlighted contrast between traditional and modern claims processing. Pacific Life Workforce Benefits was cited as the #GoldStandard for its event-based claims platform, which simplifies the process by allowing the insured to report their situation in plain language. The system then automatically identifies and manages all applicable coverages in a cohesive manner. It's not just challenging for the claimants; it puts an unfair burden on the examiners and reflects poorly on the insurance carriers, who fail to meet their own promises. Insurance shouldn't add to the stress during a crisis; it should alleviate it. Modernizing claims systems is not just about efficiency—it's about fulfilling a fundamental promise to our customers and our own team. As Pac Life has proven, the technology exists.
