Ship to shore crane tariffs are simply a tax on port development. The media has understood this point so clearly. Hopefully the US Trade Representative reverses course. What an honor to be quoted in Politico this week!
"However, China so dominates the global ship-to-shore crane industry that the rest of the world likely does not have enough production capacity to meet anticipated demand, said Ian Gansler, director of government relations at the American Association of Port Authorities.
Even if some company does decide to build ship-to-shore cranes in the United States, it will take several years for them to get up and running and to be able to make the same quality of equipment that China makes, he added.
The AAPA hasn’t heard anything definitive from the administration since it raised its complaints, but officials say they are cautiously optimistic of receiving some relief, such as a delay in the effective date of the tariffs or exempting cranes already ordered."
