🌿 #Geijera Schott, a captivating genus within the Rutaceae family, features six species native to Oceania, with Geijera parviflora standing out for its traditional use by Indigenous Australians as a pain reliever. This groundbreaking review by Prof. Sylvia Urban et al spans literature from 1930 to 2023, marking the first of its kind for this genus. It examines the chemical constituents and various pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, insect repellent, analgesic, neuroactive, and anticancer effects. This synthesis of existing knowledge reveals promising areas for future research, encouraging deeper exploration of Geijera's medicinal potential. What discoveries await in this unique genus? 🌱✨ https://lnkd.in/g2nXTX4a RMIT University  #Pharmacology #IndigenousKnowledge #PlantMedicine

Hyperspectral (HS) imaging is revolutionizing medical diagnostics, particularly in the precise detection of human veins. However, the vast size of HS image data can lead to computational challenges, making dimensionality reduction techniques essential. 🩺 Study by Mr. Henry Ndu, Dr. Akbar Sheikh Akbari, Dr. Jiamei Deng and Dr. Iosif Mporas evaluates three such techniques: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Folded PCA (FPCA), and Ward’s Linkage Strategy using Mutual Information (WaLuMI), for effective vein detection. A unique dataset from 100 subjects with diverse skin tones was created, distinguishing vein and non-vein areas. FPCA demonstrated superior accuracy in detecting veins using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification, highlighting HS imaging's potential in healthcare. Enhanced visualization with morphological operators showcases this technology's promise. https://lnkd.in/g6M9RvGR Leeds Beckett University #HyperspectralImaging #VeinDetection #MedicalDiagnostics #MachineLearning

🧮 Introducing a new perspective on Mersenne numbers, Dr. Vladimir Pletser defines Global Generalized Mersenne numbers, denoted as GM_{a,n}, in the form (a^n - (a-1)^n). This study delves into their properties, particularly for prime exponents n, and extends classical theorems regarding congruence properties. 🔐 Additionally, the research briefly discusses the implications of Generalized Mersenne primes in #cryptography. https://lnkd.in/gJXferiM #MersenneNumbers #NumberTheory #Mathematics

📚 Transforming Math #Education: Empowering Panamanian Teachers Panamanian teacher training in #mathematics has historically been scarce, but innovative graduate programs have recently been implemented. Panamanian teacher training in mathematics has historically been scarce, but innovative graduate programs have recently been implemented. Dr. Luisa Morales Maure's article details one of these programs, focusing on its design and the results obtained in its second implementation. 📝 Among the most notable findings is the creation of a platform and a set of tasks that have served to train new generations of teachers. In addition, a significant change is observed in the criteria that guide teaching practice, underlining the growing importance of emotional and interaction aspects in the teaching process. https://lnkd.in/gen-V2aT

🔧 Optimizing #HydraulicSystems Maintenance: Insights from the West Balkans 🔍 The shift toward advanced maintenance practices has significantly reduced the theoretical probability of failures in hydraulic systems. However, a concerning lack of market intelligence and maintenance management persists. 💡 Dr. Marko Orošnjak PhD and Dr. Dragoljub Šević's study examines asset-intensive companies utilizing hydraulic power systems through a comprehensive survey. By applying a Correspondence Analysis with Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (CA-AHC) approach, they analyze multidimensional data to identify key features influencing maintenance performance. Their findings reveal that while equipment age correlates with increased failure probability, factors such as the number of maintenance personnel, equipment size based on energy consumption, and fluid cleanliness activities play crucial roles in shaping maintenance outcomes. https://lnkd.in/g32_d39d Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad

🏗️ Rethinking Construction: Modular vs. Traditional Methods  As urban populations soar, the construction industry faces mounting pressure to innovate and reduce its environmental footprint. Enter #ModularConstruction, a method that promises efficiency and speed while minimizing harm to the planet. Dr. Vinayak (Vinny) Kaushal, Ph.D., P.E. and his colleague's review explores the distinctions between modular construction and traditional on-site methods, highlighting the environmental benefits and efficiencies that modular techniques offer. While not a one-size-fits-all solution, modular construction presents a promising avenue for sustainable growth in the industry. Could this be the key to building a greener future? 🌍🔨  https://lnkd.in/gk-tqEDT #SustainableBuilding #UrbanDevelopment #GreenBuilding

♻️ The #Biofactory: Quantifying Sustainability in Chile's Wastewater #CircularEconomy 🌍 Chile's #wastewater treatment is evolving, but how sustainable is the shift to a circular economy in this sector? Study by Dr. Madeline Furness, Ricardo Bello-Mendoza and Rolando Chamy Maggi uses Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) to explore the environmental, socio-cultural, and economic impacts of transitioning from conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to circular economy models—referred to as Biofactories. 📊 Key Findings: - The circular wastewater economy (WW-CE) improves #sustainability performance across the board. - Chile’s Biofactories show significant sustainability gains compared to conventional systems. - LCSA and Multi-criteria Decision Making models help identify trade-offs in transitioning to WW-CEs. 💧 Chile's pioneering approach could set a global example for wastewater management. https://lnkd.in/gkwBYmpX University of Canterbury UC Civil and Natural Resources Engineering

Over a century since Erlang's groundbreaking work in 1909, the M/D/c queueing system remains a pivotal topic in operations research. 📊 Dr. David Tung Chong Wong's paper introduces a novel approach to determining the exact closed-form queueing delay formula using the Lambert-W function, offering explicit solutions for the system's roots. 🕒 Additionally, unsaturated probabilities for the number of customers are derived, enabling the calculation of the mean number of customers and mean queueing delay. His numerical results align closely with those previously published by Seelen, Tijms, and Van Hoorn, confirming the robustness of this method. https://lnkd.in/gD-V-Cns University of Waterloo #QueueingTheory #OperationsResearch #Mathematics

🔊 Exploring Acoustic Pulse Behavior in Polymeric Insulation for PD Detection Partial discharge events generate elastic waves that can be detected through acoustic pulses, but reflections and multiple propagation paths complicate their detection in solid insulation systems. Using finite element methods in COMSOL, this study by Dr. WH Siew et al models the impact of boundary reflections and explores how pulse shape, magnitude, and arrival time are influenced. ⚡📐 Could these findings enhance the precision of PD event identification in high-voltage insulation systems? https://lnkd.in/g_saYwQX #AcousticEmission #PartialDischarge #FiniteElementMethod
