Providing nonprofit and for-profit organizations with funding to de-risk and scale high-impact solutions to food waste.

About us

Help us enact systems-level change to ensure we're making the best use of the food we grow with the ReFED Catalytic Grant Fund – a first-of-its-kind initiative to support funders looking to drive action. The Catalytic Grant Fund is designed to accelerate the development and implementation of food waste solutions across the value chain by providing recoverable and non-recoverable grants to initiatives with high potential to reduce food waste and GHG emissions, as well as efforts to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in our food system. Why food waste reduction? It's the number one solution to mitigate climate change according to the nonprofit Project Drawdown. Each year in the US alone, the equivalent of 90 billion meals' worth of food goes uneaten, most of which goes to landfill or another waste location, where it decomposes and generates methane, a greenhouse gas that's more potent than carbon dioxide. Reducing food waste can cut methane in the atmosphere on an accelerated timeline – making it critical for reducing warming by 2050. ReFED’s analysis shows that it will take $14B in annual funding to scale the solutions we need to cut food waste by 50% by the year 2030, in accordance with national and international goals. Of this amount, $3B is needed in the form of catalytic funding – capital that is patient, risk-tolerant, and flexible in order to unlock outsized impact. That's where the ReFED Catalytic Grant Fund – and you – come in. The Grant Fund focuses on opportunities where its grant capital and support can be catalytic by: 1) unlocking additional capital from other funders, and/or 2) generating impact by funding initiatives that have been overlooked by other funders but that demonstrate great potential to reduce food waste.
